Gerret Stoffelse Van Zandt, our first American Van Zandt ancestor, was from Zandt, North Holland, and immigrated to New Netherlands (New York) in 1651 at age 7. He was indentured to work the first three years for Cornelis de Potter, a merchant in New York, for 200 carolus guilders per year and free room and board. Gerret took the oath of allegiance to England in New Utrecht (in present day Brooklyn) in September 1687, stating that he had been in the country for 36 years. He was one of fourteen patentees of New Utrecht, Long Island and was a magistrate there in 1681. Gerret purchased two half lots there February 1, 1691, which he sold on July 31 1695. After selling his land in Utrecht in 1695, he moved with his family to Bucks County, Pennsylvania, settling in Bensalem Township, where he purchased 150 acres of land on the "River Neshaminah" 12/10/1698. Gerret died there about 1706. His wife was Elizabeth Gerritz, whom he married in America (New York) in 1668, and they had ten children.

move to Bucks County
(HE)removed to Bucks county, where Joseph GROWDON on 12 mo. 10, 1698-9, conveys to him 150 acres in Bensalem township, and on the same date conveys a like tract adjoining to his son Cornelius. It is probable that he was located for a time in New York, as he had two children baptized at the Dutch Reformed church there in 1674 and 1676, respectively. It is generally conceded that he was twice married, as the record of the baptisms above mentioned gives the name of his wife as Lysbeth GERRITZ, while the later baptisms at New Utrecht and Flatbush churches give it as Lysbeth CORNELIUS. It is, however, possible that in one instance her father's surname is used and in the other his first name as was common on the Dutch records. Cornelius GERRETS was a member of the Dutch church at New Utrecht.
Garret VANSAND
died intestate in Bensalem township, Bucks county, Pennsylvania, prior to June 5, 1706, the date upon which his ten children make a conveyance of his land purchased as before stated in February, 1698-9. The record of baptism of seven of his ten children appears at the Dutch church of New Netherlands, and will be given in connection with a sketch of each child, taken in regular order of birth, later in this article. The names of the ten children were: 1. Stoffell; 2. Cornelius; 3. Josias; 4. Harman; 5. Albert; 6. Johannes; 7. Jacobus; 8. George; 9. Jesina; 10.Garret. (Harman was really the third child in order of birth, and Josias fourth).

Garrett Stoeffelse, also known as Gerret Stoffelszen, was born in 1644, probably in Amsterdam, Holland. He was the son of Stoffel Harmenszen, born about 1618, probably in Kleverins near Jever, Germany, and Moeder Gerrits. Moeder was Stoffel's first wife whom he married in Amsterdam 28 June 1643. She was baptized in Amsterdam 2 November 1623 and buried there 17 July 1644. Moeder was the daughter of Gerrit Janszen and Vroutgen Pieters. Stoffel died in September 1655 in New Amsterdam.
Garrett came to New Amsterdam in 1651, settling in the Brooklyn area. Garrett married Elizabeth (Lysbeth) Gerritse and had eleven children. In the 1690's, he and several of his sons began purchasing large tracts of land in Bucks County, PA. Since Garrett and his entire family moved to Bucks County about 1695, this group became known as the Bucks County line. However, it should be noted that a few of Garrett's sons continued to migrate south and settled in Delaware and Maryland.
Garrett and Elizabeth had two daughters, Tryntje and Jesinah, and one son, Josias, who died at young ages. Their other eight sons who grew to maturity and married have descendants living in almost every state of our nation. Garrett died prior to 20 June 1706. The eight sons include:
1. Stoeffel married Rachel Corsen and had numerous children. Son John moved to New Jersey and became the ancestor of most of the Van Sants now living in South Jersey. Another son Joshua settled in Maryland.
2. Cornelius married twice and moved to Maryland.
3. Harmon married twice and is the Vansant ancestor of most of the Van Sants who still live in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
4. Albertus married twice and moved to Delaware.
5. Johannes married and died in his early thirties. We have no record of his young children.
6. Jacobus married Rebecca Vandegrift. They had numerous children.
7. Joris (George) married, had numerous children and moved to Maryland.
8. Garrett, the youngest, married and had several daughters; therefore the Vansant name did not continue in this line.
Garrett's line continued, actually, through his sons Garrett and Cornelius, as proven in: Wills: Abstracts: Book 2 : Bucks Co, PA 1739-1759." Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Abstracts of Bucks County, Pennsylvania Wills, 1685-1785 (Westminster, Md.: Family Line Publications, 1995), page 33. Abstracting Lib. 2, p. 85. Garret Vansandt.
