Thomas Hoo, 1st Baron Hoo and Hastings
Thomas Hoo, 1st Baron Hoo and Hastings (ca. 1396-1455) was a Knight of the Garter and English courtier.
Thomas was the son of Sir Thomas Hoo (ca. 1370 ·Äì Luton Hoo, Bedfordshire, 23 August 1420) and wife (m. 1395) Eleanor de Felton (Litcham, Norfolk, 1378 ·Äì 8 August 1400). He succeeded his father in 1420, inheriting the family's ancestral home of Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire as well as Mulbarton, Norfolk and other estates. He fought for Henry VI of England in France, and for his services was made, first Keeper of the Seals, then Chancellor of France. In 1439, he was granted the castle, lordship and honour of Hastings, and in 1445 elected Knight of the Garter. Two years later he was created Baron of Hoo and Hastings.
Lord Hoo died 13 February 1454/5. The barony of Hoo and Hastings become extinct at his death, and his properties passed to his four daughters and his half-brother, Sir Thomas Hoo, born 1416 to his father's second wife, Elizabeth de Etchyngham. The brothers are interred together in the Dacre Tomb at Herstmonceux All Saints Church in Sussex.
Hoo married firstly, before 1 July 1428, Elizabeth Wychingham, daughter of Nicholas Wychingham, esquire, of Wichingham, Norfolk, by whom he had a daughter, Anne Hoo (born c.1448), who married Sir Geoffrey Boleyn, mercer and Lord Mayor of London.[1]
He married, secondly, before 1445, Eleanor Welles, daughter of Lionel de Welles, 6th Baron Welles, and his first wife, Joan Waterton, by whom he had three daughters:[1]
Anne Hoo, who married firstly Roger Copley (d. before 1488), esquire, of London and Roughey in Horsham, Sussex, by whom she had three sons and six daughters; secondly, William Greystoke, gentleman, and thirdly Sir Thomas Fiennes.[2]
Eleanor Hoo, who married James Carew of Beddington.[citation needed]
Elizabeth Hoo, who married firstly Thomas Masingbeard, and secondly Sir John Devenish.[2]

Thomas Hoo, 1st Lord Hoo was the son of Sir Thomas Hoo and Eleanor de Felton.2,1 He married, firstly, Elizabeth Wychingham, daughter of Nicholas Wychingham.2 He married, secondly, Elizabeth Welles, daughter of Lionel Welles, Lord Welles.3 He died on 13 February 1455.
He was created 1st Lord Hoo, of Hoo in the county of Bedford and of Hastings in the county of Sussex [England] on 2 June 1448.2

.... Sir William Hoo of Hastings had served three sovereigns in ambassadorial, diplomatic, and other distinguished ways during forty years. He died Lord Hoo and Hastings, 22d November 1410, aged 75. His first wife was Alice de St. Omer, daughter and coheiress of Nicolas, Lord de Malmaynes, of the baronial Kent family who came with the Conqueror, and who were heired chiefly by the Crevequeres, barons of Chatham and Leeds Castle. Sir William Hoo and Alice de St. Omer had Thomas, who succeed his father, and in more ways than one. .... In the roll of the knights of the garter, Sir Thomas Hoo, lord Hoo and Hastings, is entered as elected in 1445, and these services are the explanation of his K.G. In 1460 William, lord Hastings, had K.G. Sir Thomas had two brothers, John and William, and one sister, 'Margaret, who married the wealthy Thomas St. Clere, from which marriage the family of Gage is descended.' The antiquary adds, 'The descendants of the daughter Margaret were ultimately the heirs of Thomas Hoo who died in 1486.' This was the last of the line. .... The family subsequently spread into other countries, and temp. Edw. II. were found in Sussex, where Sir Thomas Hoo was escheator and for six years sheriff temp. Edw. III. and had grant of a market in Wartling, and fair in other manors, and also free warren, which grants were confirmed to his widow, Isabel, in 1390.
Sir William Hoo, son of Sir Thomas and Isabel, was a man of importance during the reigns of Edw. III Rich. II. and Hen. Iv. He was a legatee under the will of Sir

Thomas Wingfield, of the Suffolk family, from which he took his second wife, bearing date 17th July, 1378; he was Governor of the castle of Oye in Picardy, and by Henry IV. was engaged in matters of great trust, particularly in his transactions with Burgundy. He died 22nd Nov. 1410, and was succeeded by his son, Thomas Hoo, who married twice, and by each wife had a son, both named Thomas.

Sir Thomas Hoo, whose monument is at Horsham, was the son by the first wife. Camden calls him the "noble Baron Hoo," and he rendered great and important services to his sovereign, alike as soldier and a lawyer. .... etc.
On the 6th June 1448, he was created a baron by the title of Baron Hoo, of Hoo, co. Bedford, and of Hastings, in Sussex. .... Dugdale did not know the date of his death, but referred only to his will as dated 12th Feb. 1455. A copy, or rather perhaps full extracts from that will are among the MSS. at the College of Arms. By an inquisition taken at Battle, on 28th April, 33 Hen. VI. it was found that he died on 13th Feb. 1455, the day after the date of his will, leaving one daughter (by his first wife, Anne, the heiress of Sir Nicholas Wychingham), aged thirty years at her father's death, then married to Geoffrey Bulleyn, and who so became ancestor to Queen Elizabeth; and three daughters (by his second wife Eleanor, daughter and co-heiress of Lionel Lord Welles), viz. 1. Another Anna, aged seven years on her father's death, who married Sir Roger Copley, of Roughey, in which chantry the monument is: 2. Eleanor, five years old, who married Thomas Etchingham, and then Sir Richard Carew of Beddington: and 3, Elizabeth, four years old, who married Sir Thomas Massingberd, and then Sir John Devenish. .... etc.

The half-brother, Thomas Hoo, represented Sussex county in parliament in 1446 and 1448, and Horsham in 1472. .... He married Alice, daughter of Walter Urrey, and died without issue 23 Nov. 1486. From the inquisition taken (after his death) at Lindfield, on 28th Oct. 3 Hen. VII. (1487), he seems to have been rather a turbulent friend of the Browns, .... On this inquistion his cousin of the half blood, Sir Wm. Bulleyn was found to be his heir; but by an inquisition taken at Dunstable in Nov. 1486, it appears that the true date of the death was 8th Oct. and not 23rd Nov. 1486, and that his cousin William Boleyn succeeded to the estates, not as heir general, but under a settlement dated 10 Dec. 13 Edw. IV. under which the heirs of Anne Boleyn, mother of William, took in default of heirs of the body of Thomas Hoo; and it was found that his heirs were the descendants of Margaret Hoo, (the sister of Sir Thomas Hoo, knt. father of both Lord Hoo and his half-brother,) who married a St. Clere. .... etc.

The Most Noble Order of the Garter is an order of chivalry, or knighthood, originating in medieval England, and presently bestowed on recipients in the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms; it is the pinnacle of the honours system in the United Kingdom. Membership in the order is limited to the sovereign, the Prince of Wales, and no more than twenty-four members, or Companions; the order also comprises Supernumerary knights and ladies (e.g., members of the British Royal Family and foreign monarchs).
The order's emblem, depicted on insignia, is a garter with the motto Honi soit qui mal y pense (Old French: "shame upon him who thinks evil upon it", or "evil to him who evil thinks") in gold lettering. Members of the order wear such a garter on ceremonial occasions.

The Order of the Garter, pertaining to England, is senior in age and precedence; The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle pertains to Scotland; and the now-dormant The Most Illustrious Order of St Patrick pertains to Ireland. New appointments to the Order of the Garter are always announced on St George's Day, 23 April, Saint George being the patron saint of England.[3]
