Theodora is believed to have been born sometime around 1180/5 in Constantinople to parents whose identities are uncertain. However, it is known that one of her grandmothers was a daughter of a Byzantine Emperor As such, Theodora may have been a daughter of John Doukas (son of Andronikos Angelos) or else a daughter of one of Andronikos' daughters. Theodora Angelina was the only daughter of Anna Angelina and Isaac Comnenus Sebastocrator. Her maternal grandparents were Byzantine emperor Alexius III Angelus and Euphrosyne Doukaina Kamaterina.
Theodora was first married, in 1197, to Ivanko, leader of the Bulgarians. Her father had died in Bulgarian captivity not many months earlier.
A few years later she became one of the wives of a rival warlord, Dobromir, leader of Bulgarians.
Later, after the Fourth Crusade brought about the collapse of the Byzantine Empire, Theodora married Leopold VI, Duke of Austria. Leopold and Theodora had seven children (according to Varzos, cited below):
Margaret, Duchess of Austria (1204 - February 28, 1266). Married firstly with Henry, elder son and pressumptive heir of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, and when he died, she married with the King Ottokar II of Bohemia.
Agnes of Austria (February 19, 1205 - August 29, 1226). Married Albrecht I, Duke of Saxony.
Leopold of Austria (1207 - 1216).
Henry of Austria (1208 - November 28, 1228). Married Agnes of Turingia; their only daughter, Gertrudis, was the general heiress of the house of Babenberg after the death of his uncle.
Gertrude of Austria (1210 - 1241). Married Henry IV Raspe, Landgrave of Turingia.
Frederick II, Duke of Austria (25 April 1211 - June 15, 1246).
Constance of Austria (April 6, 1212 - June 5, 1243). Married Heinrich III of Meißen.

The precise relationship between the following person and the imperial family has not been established.¬â€  The only primary sources which provide any indication of Theodora·Äôs origin are German, as indicated below.¬â€  As shown by primary source reports of other marriages between Byzantine princesses and western European nobility, medieval western authors appear to have had little understanding of the detailed family relationships within the Byzantine imperial families.¬â€  Theodora·Äôs marriage is dated to 1203.¬â€  At first sight, this suggests that she belonged to the Angelos imperial family.¬â€  However, by that time the Fourth Crusade was well underway and had already been diverted to Constantinople.¬â€  Given the political turmoil, it seems unlikely that the Angelos emperors would then have had time to negotiate overseas marriages.¬â€  Another possibility is that Theodora had been present at the Austrian ducal court since childhood.¬â€  Maybe she was brought to Vienna by Theodora Komnene, second wife of Duke Heinrich II and paternal grandmother of Duke Leopold VI, whose death is recorded in [1184/85] before the accession of the Angelos family to the imperial throne.¬â€  If that is correct, Theodora could have belonged to any of the three imperial families which ruled during the second half of the 12th century, Komnenos, Doukas or Angelos.¬â€

1.¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  THEODORA ([1180/90]-Kahlenberg 22/23 Jun 1246, bur Kloster Neuburg).¬â€  The Annales Mellicenses record the marriage in 1203 of "Liupoldus dux Austri√¶ et Styri√¶" and "Theodoram filiam regis Grecorum"[863], although given her absence from Byzantine sources it appears unlikely that Theodora was the daughter of an emperor.¬â€  The Continuatio Admuntensis states that she was "Constantinopolitani imperatoris ex filia neptem", specifying that her marriage was celebrated in Vienna[864].¬â€  If interpreted literally, that source would indicate that Theodora was the daughter of an emperor·Äôs daughter.¬â€  The name of the emperor in question is not specified.¬â€  If Theodora was a member of the Angelos family, from a chronological point of view her grandfather could have been Emperor Alexios III if she had been born in the last part of the date range estimated above.¬â€  However, as noted above, medieval western sources were often imprecise in describing family relationships within the Byzantine imperial families.¬â€  It is possible therefore that Theodora was more remotely related to the imperial family, or even that she belonged to the Komnenos or Dukas imperial families as suggested above.¬â€  Theodora is shown as the possible daughter of Ioannes Angelos in Europ√§ische Stammtafeln[865], but the basis for this speculation has not been ascertained.¬â€  She became a nun at Kahlenberg.¬â€  The necrology of Salzburg St Rudpert records the death "II Kal Jun" of "Theodora ducissa Austrie et Styrie"[866].¬â€  The necrology of Lilienfeld records the death "XI Kal Jul" of "Theodora ducissa ux fundatoris ni Leupoldi"[867].¬â€  The necrology of Kloster Neuburg records the death "IX Kal Jul" of "Theodora ducissa Austrie et Stirie sor na"[868].¬â€  m (1203) LEOPOLD VI Duke of Austria and Styria, son of LEOPOLD V Duke of Austria [Babenberg] & his wife Ilona of Hungary ([1176/77]-San Germano 28 Jul 1230, bur Lilienfeld).¬â€
