Progenitor of the Herbert family, earls of Pembroke.
Pencoed Castle, the ancestral home of this Morgan family, is located east of Newport, near Magor, Gwent, south Wales. "The moat and round SW tower of Pencoed Castle may be relics of a castle held in 1270 by Sir Richard de la More, and in 1306 by Maurice and Walter de Kemys. It passed to the Morgans of Tredegar in the 15th century and a big new mansion on the east side and the gatehouse on the west side were built by Sir Thomas Morgan in c. 1490-1500. The gatehouse and corner tower are ruined and the mansion lies in a gutted and derelict state, though still with some flooring and the roof more or less intact." - Mike Salter 1991
By about 1470, the estate of Pencoed was in the hands of the Morgan family of Tredegar. It seems to have been owned by Morgan ap Jenkin Philip, and then his son, Sir Thomas Morgan (c.1453-1510), who is thought likely to have fought at the battle of Bosworth in 1485 and who was probably the first of his family to settle at Pencoed. In 1485 the Battle of Bosworth had ended the Wars of the Roses and in general the Welsh had backed the winning side. It became possible at this time to build large family homes without having to worry too much about arrow slits or gun ports and Pencoed was a fine example. In its heyday Pencoed reflected a peaceful (and for some) a prosperous period in Welsh affairs.
