Will of Eve Smith - April 24, 1704
In the name of God Amen. I, Eve Smith, of the County of Richmond and Parish of North Farnham, being weak of body but in sound and good disposing memory, praise be given to God for the same, do make this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following that it say:
First and principally, I resign my Soul into the merciful hands of Almighty God, my Creator, assuredly hope through the mercy of my Blessed Savior to obtain remission of all my sins, and my body I commit to the Earth whence it was taken, buried by the discretion of my Executor herein named, for the worldly good and estate the Lord hath lent me.
I give and bequeath to well-beloved Grandson, William Goad (two words illegible) and furniture, three plates and three young hogs.
Secondly, I give and bequeath to my well-beloved Grandson John Goad two thousand five hundred pounds of tobacco to buy him a servant, one featherbed, a rug, a pair of Blemhotts, one pair of sheets, three pewter dishes, six plates, three young hogs.
Thirdly, I give and bequeath to my well-beloved daughter, Katherine Goad, her father John Williams' sea chest, all my own wearing clothes except two suits of Lavender linen which I give and bequeath to my well-beloved granddaughter, Hannah Goad.
Fourthly, I give and bequeath to the aforesaid Hannah Goad two men servants; the new bed and furniture; half a dozen of large dishes; a dozen of plates: a warming pan and spice mortar; two pewter candlesticks and one brass candlestick; a pair of hand irons; two pairs of tongs; a smoothing iron and a pair of bellows; the great, middle and little pots and appurtenances to them; half a dozen of chairs; the great table; two little tables; two chests and a looking glass; two mares; one nock bed and furniture; a cart and wheels and the goat and a side saddle; two pewter chamber pots; one new tankard; a linen wheel; one woolen wheel; linen for three pairs of sheets; all the sheets belonging to the house, those before given excepted; eighteen ells of dowlor[a coarse linen]; all the table linen belonging to the house
Fifthly, I desire that the stock of cattle and sheep be divided unto four parts and that the aforesaid Hannah have the half of them. I will also the boys have the other half. I will that all that I gave to the two boys aforesaid be removed of the plantation and all that I gave to the girl remain.
Furthermore, I will that if John should die before he is of age that his share fall to his sister, Hannah, and if Hannah die without heirs of her body lawfully begotten, her share to be equally divided between the two boys. If William should die before he is of age, then his part to go to the child that Katherine Goad, alias Williams, shall have (of Abraham) Goad her present husband. I give all the ( ? ) of my personal estate of what kindsoever within ( ? ) and without not hereinbefore bequeathed after my debts and (personal ? ) expenses discharged and ordain my loving son, Abraham Goad, sole executor of this my last will and testament, revoking all other wills by me heretofore made. Smyth was the surname of Eve's second husband--not her maiden name
Katherine is named as her mother's executor--see Eve Williams' Will under entry for Eve (unknown maiden name). Katherine was the daughter of John and Eve Williams and step-daughter of her mother's second husband, William Smyth/Smith. At times, Katerine's mother is listed as Eve Smyth; however, Smyth was the surname of Eve's second husband--not her maiden name. Katherine is listed in Findagrave.com in North Farnham Episcopal Church Cemetery under Memorial 58108256. Probably her most famous descendant thus far is John Sevier, first Governor of Tennessee.
In her will which was proven 4 October 1705, Eve (Smith) Williams of the parish of North Farnham, County of Richmond, Virginia, leaves her husband's, John William's, sea chest to their daughter, Katherine Williams, who was married to Abraham Goad. John Williams may not have been an ordinary sea man--as in his widow's will Eve leaves two thousand five hundred pounds of tobacco to their grandson Goad to purchase a servant (slave). Eve leaves two man servants (slaves) to her granddaughter, Hannah Goad, plus two pewter candlesticks and one of brass. Hannah also receives the new bed and furniture, the great table, a looking glass, two mares, and livestock. William, John and Hannah Goad also receive livestock. Eve apparently was fairly well to do.
