Sir Alexander de Cave of North & South Cave, Yorkshire, alive in 1275: a daughter named Ursula married Sir John Ella of Kirk Ella, knight (Ursula de Cave nupta Johanni Ella de Kerk (Kirk) Ela (Ella), Militi.).
Later, the Cave family had a crest to seat on top of their shield/coat-of-arms and in the British Library Mss.Department (once a department of the British Museum), there is the following Seal: Richard Cave of Stanford, Co.,Northt.,Gentl., [with roots in North & South Cave, Yorkshire], ref.8419 (A.D.1522). Red: fair condition (Harl.ch.47 H.33.). Oval: out of a flower stalked and leaved, a grayhound's head per ermine and ermines. Bended bourder. From a signet-ring with .....|.*
*It is not clear without seeing the Seal if the Crest was a full figure of a grayhound or just the head.
Not a wedding ring, but a lady or a gent would have a signet-ring, i.e., signature ring to emboss a wax Seal onto a document, but also there were other types of Seals.
An early scribe form of signet is "cygnet" and this is the name of a young swan, indeed they having a named or numbered ring put on one leg to remain for life, i.e., to be accountable and to where and whom they belonged to.
