Guido di Spoleto¬â€ (c800-?), 7th Holy Roman Emperor. He was Count of Camerino (876), Duke of Spoleto (883-891, as Guido III), King of Italy (891-892, as Guido I), joint King of Italy (892-894), 7th Holy Roman Emperor (891-892), and co-Holy Roman Emperor (892-984). According to Moriarty, his ancestry is not well authenticated.
With the death of Carloman, the last legitimate male descendant of Charlemagne in 879, the rivalry for the kingship of Italy became intense. Berengar I, supported by the German faction, at first had the upper hand. After 887 the French faction chose Guido as their candidate. In 883, as Duke of Spoleto, he had revolted against Charles the Fat. Guido was a man of high ambition. He had hopes of claiming the kingship of France and Lorraine in 887. Returning to Italy with a Franco-Burgundian following, he was elected King of Italy in 889 over the then reigning Berenger. He was able to keep Berenger restrained within the confines of his base of support in the northeast of Italy. In 891, Guido took the title of Emperor. He was the first non-Carolingian to do so. His intentions were to be an active ruler, but they were thwarted by by the soon- to-be emperor Arnulf, the illegitimate son of Carloman, who was called into Italy from Germany by Berengar to help him regain the throne. Guido died in 895, leaving his son, Lambert, who had been co-reigning with him since 891, to complete the struggle against Berengar. Lambert died shortly thereafter in 898, leaving the door open for Berengar to regain the throne.
This Guido is the son of Lambert I duke of Spoleto. He succeeded his father as duke of Spoleto in 880 and he warred with the Pope and rebelled to Emperor Charles the Fat. He died two years later (882-883) leaving only a young son (Wido IV). The title of duke passed on to his uncle, Wido II, who united it with the March of Camerino and became king of Italy and emperor.
He was the supposed father of the legendary character,¬â€ Arnaldo de Bai√£o.

Second born of Giido I of Spoleto, he followed his brother Lambert I duke of Spoleto in his rebellions against pope and emperor. In 876 he was created Marquis of Camerino. In 882/3 he succeeded his nephew Wido II as duke of Spoleto, becoming the most powerful lord in central Italy. In 888 he bid for the crown of West Francia but abandoned his claim after Odo of Paris was chosen by the magnates; Wido then warred with Berengar of Friuli and was able to be crowned king of Italy in Pavia in 889. In 891 he became the first non-Carolingian emperor.
He died in 894, leaving his crown to his son Lambert II.
