Margravine Mathilde of Brandenburg (* 1210, ဠ June 10, 1261 in Lüneburg) was by marriage Duchess of Brunswick-Lüneburg.

Life [edit]

Mathilde was the daughter of Margrave Albrecht II of Brandenburg (1150-1220) from the house of the Ascanians and his wife Countess Mathilde of Lusatia (1185-1225), daughter of Count Konrad II of Landsberg. Her father and Duke Wilhelm von Lüneburg mediated a marriage between their children to reunite the divided lines of Saxon rule. In 1219, Pope Honorius III. his permission to overcome the obstacles to marriage (fourth degree of relationship).

In 1228 Mathilde married in Braunschweig the future Duke Otto I the Child (1204-1252), son of Duke Wilhelm von Lüneburg and his wife Helena of Denmark. The marriage produced ten children, which enabled a broad marriage policy of the Welfs
