Generation No. 1
1. Eloi1 Pelletier was born about 1575 in Perche, France. He married Francoise Matte. She was born about 1575 in Perche, France.
Notes for Eloi Pelletier: He was a (marchand de bois) wood merchant. The name PELLETIER comes from the Latin pellis, which means furrier, one who buys, sells, or prepares furs or pelts, or one in the fur trade. The ancient Greeks and Romans regarded the wearing of furs as barbaric, but by the fifth century, the taste for rare and valuable fur-lined coats had taken the West by storm. In France, for in-stance, Charlemagne used to wear a doublet lined with otter skins during the winter. Moreover, by 1346, the fur merchants of Paris had their own special status and privi-leges. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that these many tradesmen adopted and passed along the Pelletier family name. The Pelletier Family Association website (where I got most of my Pelletier information) offers its readers a summary of the lives and times of the Pelletiers who came to settle in New France. Many of the descendants of these first pioneers still bear the Pelletier name, while other lines disappeared after only a few generations.
Children of Eloi Pelletier and Francoise Matte are:
2 i. Antoine2 Pelletier, born about 1599 in St. Pierre de Bresolettes, Tourouvre, Perche, France; died 02 Oct 1647 in Montmorency Falls, QC. He married Francoise Morin 19 Aug 1647 in Notre Dame de Quâ©bec City, QC; born about 1620 in St. Jean of Perrot, La Rochelle, France; died Bet. 25 Feb 1663 - 1666 in Sillery, Quâ©bec. Canada.

There are documents in the genealogy archives of the Paris National Library that indicate that the Pelletiers from Perche are probably descendants of Barthelâ©my Le Pelletier of Brittany. Barthelâ©my was given the Perche forest by the French King, Charles V, as a reward for his bravery in the battle of Thouars, in Poitou, August 7, 1372. (Louise Pelletier in La Pelleterie, Bulletin #25, Volume 11, No. 1, Winter 1997.)
His profession or metier du pere was as wood seller or marchand de bois in France. in Canada his job was as a coal merchant or Marchand Charbonnier.
