Karan Shilling tells the story of the Union soldier who married Olivia Ann ie Davis: "I
have heard that story all of my life. How it was told to me is:
Two Union soldiers were captured by a Southern farmer and kept in h is barn as
prisoners. The farmer had 2 daughters and they would take them food eve ry day, and as
time went by they fell in love with the Union soldiers. Well, when the w ar was over the 2
men married the daughters. Big Mama (Emma Corine Bombard Welborn) to ld us this
story a lot. She told us a lot of stuff and still does. Her body mig ht be going but her mind
is still sharp. She remembers when she was 4 years old and was helping h er mother wash
dishes. She has outlived all her brothers and sisters and most of her kid s. She was the
oldest and when her parents died she took care of her siblings. She has b een through a lot.
When I had to do papers on history in school I would just go to her. " F rom email

From telephone conversation with Emma Corine Bombard Welborn, March 26, 20 00:
"Charles and Annie went first to Texas after they were married, where Ann ie taught
school, then to Louisiana. Charles was a horse drover, and he was go ne a lot. He had
TB. his daughter died the same day he did. He is buried in Old Pleasa nt Hill, but I
couldn't locate the grave. Annie had a sister named Molly who married t he other man
taken captive with Charles. There is a Millican connection somehow, becau se our "Aunt
Ann and Uncle Bill" lived nearby. Granny [Annie] was a Baptist. She w as short in
stature, nice, and good to her grandchildren. [Annie married Peter Walla ce after Charles
Bombard's death. She had 2 sons, Fred and Walter.] Peter Wallace left af ter Walter was
born. ...Walter got married about 2 weeks before Annie died. Granny h ad a trunk with
important papers in it. After she died, Uncle Walter burned the pape rs in the trunk. His
wife tried to stop him... Uncle Fred worked off... My daddy [Charles Ever ett Bombard]
was the jolliest person. He died of typhoid pneumonia and was sick for ab out 4 weeks
before he died...he had sent for Grampa Davis, who didn't like him, a nd 2 men rode horses
12-15 miles to get Grampa Davis out of church, but [Charles] died before G rampa Davis
could get there. "
