Thomas Wright, of Brook Hall or "The Moat House," South Weald, county Essex, England, was born at Brook Hall in Essex, England, son of John Wright & Grace Glascock, where he was baptized November 19, 1610. He came first to Watertown, Mass before the colonial government was established at Boston. He moved to Wethersfield, CT about 1639 where he was a man of influence. He is found at Wethersfield, Connecticut Colony, in 1640, where he was deputy to the general court, 1643.
He d. testate at Wethersfield, Conn. before Apr. 29, 1670, the date his estate inventory was taken.He is buried in Wethersfield Village Cemetary, Hartford County, Connecticut.

Thomas m. 1) on Aug. 10, 1629 at Brook Hall in Southweald, Mary Cranbrook. She d. 1636-1641. He may have married a second time; there is dispute over which wife was the mother of his two youngest children born 1639-1641. Thomas married either 2nd or 3rd on May 2, 1647 the widow Margaret Elson, by whom he had no children. She d. testate at Wethersfield betw. Jan. 19 & Apr. 4, 1671.

Jan. 6, 1660/1), Mary Butler, dau. of Dea. Richard Butler & Elizabeth Bigelow, b. circa 1639 at Cambridge, Mass. & d. Sept. 12, 1689 at Wethersfield, Conn. Seven children of the family.
Emmigration 1634 (?) aboard ship "Susan & Ellen." Thomas was initially in Massachusetts and was then one of the first settlers in Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut about 1639. (Note - The first settlement was wiped out by Indians in 1637, which killed Hugh Hillard, the first husband of Margaret (Elson) Hillard). A 3-acre homelot was recorded to him in Wethersfield on the 11th day of the 12th month in 1640.
[The following is not agreed upon and needs more research: After his wife, Mary, died about 1636 (probably in Massachusetts), Thomas married Margaret Butler by whom he may have had his sons Joseph and James.]

Dec. 17, 1714 at Wethersfield, âˆšÜ 75 (g.s.); m. 1) Dec. 10, 1663 at Wethersfield, Mary Stoddard, dau. of John Stoddard & Mary Foote, b. Wethersfield, Conn. on Mar 12, 1643/4 and d. at Wethersfield on Aug. 23, 1683, âˆšÜ 40. He m. 2) his deceased wife's unmarried sister Mercy Stoddard, b. Nov. 1652 at Wethersfield & d. there on Jan. 2, 1714/5. Seven children by first wife Mary and two by second wife Mercy.
5. James Wright, b. circa 1640-41 prob. at Wethersfield, Conn., d. Dec. 24, 1727 at Middletown, Conn., âˆšÜ 88; m. 1) Nov. 20, 1660 at Wethersfield, Dorcas Weed, dau. of Jonas of Stamford, Conn., formerly of Wethersfield, who d. at Middletown, Conn. on Dec. 24, 1692. He m. 2) Mary, who d. Oct. 20, 1740 at Wethersfield. James had numerous children, but their identity is not well-proved.
After Thomas's second wife Margaret died about 1641, and some time after May 1, 1647, in Wethersfield, Connecticut Colony, Thomas married widow Margaret Elson Hillard, widow of Hugh Hilliard and John Elson. They had no children together but she had children from her first marriage to Hugh Hilliard and her will mentions her Hilliard grandchildren. She died without issue in 1670.
Thomas Wright bought a lot of land and would eventually have his own island, called "Wright Island" in the middle of the Connecticut River. The Indians called it Mannahannock ("Great Laughing Place"). A part of this island was still owned by the family in 1900. It would later be eroded away, though, and does not exist today.
Thomas Wright was a deputy to the General Court of Connecticut in 1643; served as a selectman in 1658; and was a commissioner on town-lines. His earmark for cattle was duly recorded and a fence tax recorded in 1647. He was made a freeman on May 11, 1654, and his name is in the 1659 list as a freeman at Wethersfield. He also was a constable and sat on juries in 1643, 1665, and 1666. Thomas Wright's name was also included in a 1642 list from Guilford, New Haven county, Connecticut for the assessment of the inhabitants of that town.
In his 1670 will, Thomas Wright Sr. gave his wife, Margaret, all the meat and drink in his house and, "all the linen that I have in my possession that was of her own spinning." (Stories of Wethersfield page 29)
