    -----------------------------
FRIEDRICH, son of SIEGFRIED Comte [de Luxembourg] & his wife Hedwig --- (-6 Oct 1019). "Domna Berta, viri illustris Volcmari comitis relicta" donated property "in pago Moselensi in comitatu Waldeleuinga cui Gisilbertus comesဦvilla Mudenfert" to St Maximin, Trier by charter dated 996 witnessed by "Friderich comes"[71]. Herimannus names "Theoderico Metense episcopo et Heinrico Baioriæ duce Fridericoque comite" as brothers of "Adalbero clericus, reginæ Cunigundis germanus", when recording their rebellion against Emperor Heinrich II in 1008[72]. He is named "Fridericus, frater Cunigundæ imperatricis" when his death in 1019 is recorded[73]. Graf im Moselgau. Vogt of Stablo and Malmédy.
m --- [von Hammerstein] heiress of Gleiberg, daughter of HERIBERT Graf im Kinziggau Pfalzgraf [Konradiner] & his wife Imiza --- (-after 985). The parentage of the wife of Graf Friedrich is suggested by the Vita Adelheidis which names "Irminthrudis, Alverad [et] Berthrada" as the three sisters of Adelheid, daughters of "Megengoz" & his wife, specifying that Irminthrudis was grandmother of "Heinrici magnifici ducis et Adhelberonis Metensis episcopi, Friderici ducis"[74], although the primary source which confirms the name of her father has not yet been identified.
Graf Friedrich & his wife had ten children:
OGIVE (-21 Feb or 9 Mar 1030, bur Gent St Peter). The Genealogica Comitum Flandriæ Bertiniana names "filiam Gisleberti comitis Odgivam" as wife of "Balduinum Barbatum"[116], the marriage presumably being arranged by Emperor Heinrich II as part of the alliance negotiated in 1012. Ogive is shown as daughter of Graf Friedrich in Europäische Stammtafeln[117]. There is no reference to Friedrich's older brother Giselbert having married and had children. The chronology does not favour Ogive being the daughter of Giselbert, son of Friedrich. It is therefore assumed that the reference to "Gisleberti comitis" is an error, although the primary source has not yet been identified which confirms that Friedrich was Ogive's father. The Annales Blandinienses record the death in 1030 of "Odgiva comitissa"[118]. The Memorial of "OdgivaဦBalduino domino" records her death "IX Mar"[119].
m ([1012]) as his first wife, BAUDOUIN IV "le Barbu/Pulchrae Barbae" Count of Flanders, son of ARNOUL II ·Äúle Jeune·Äù Count of Flanders & his wife Rozala di Ivrea [Italy] ([980]-30 May 1035).
Count Baudouin IV & his first wife had one child:
    a) BAUDOUIN de Flandre ([1012/13]-Lille 1 Sep 1067, bur Lille St Pierre). The Genealogica Comitum Flandriæ Bertiniana names "Balduinum Insulanum" son of "Balduinum Barbatum [et] Odgivam"[205]. He succeeded his father in 1035 as BAUDOUIN V "le Pieux/Insulanus" Count of Flanders.

    Death: 21 NOV 1030 3 2
    Note:
Otgive of Luxemburg Wife of Baldwin IV, count of Flanders.
Date of Birth: Say 980×995. As is usual for this period, it is difficult to narrow down an accurate estimate for Otgive's birthdate. However, we know from Guillaume de Jumièges that Otgive's son Baldwin V temporarily rebelled against his father Baldwin IV (who died in 1035, after a reign exceding 47 years), being reconciled by the influence of Robert of Normandy [GND vi, 6 (2: 52-5)], and Vanderkindere mentions an undated act in which Baldwin V and his wife Adèle participated during the life of Baldwin IV ["Balduinus marchysus cum Adela uxore sua adhuc vivente patre suo" Vanderkindere (1902) 1: 298, citing Van Lokeren #108]. Thus, Otgive's son was probably already an adult when he succeeded in 1035. In the other direction, her husband Baldwin IV was still a minor when he succeeded in 987×8, and was probably born after 980 (his father Arnulf II being an infant in 962). Thus, a birthdate for Otgive in the stated interval seems likely. Note that various attempts to narrow down her birthdate further have generally been based on the assumption that her parentage was known. Assuming that she was a daughter of one of the two candidates listed here, her birthdate would most likely be toward the end of the interval given above. Place of Birth: Unknown.
Date of Death: 21 February 1030. Place of Death: Unknown. ["Obiit Odgiva comitissa." Ann. Bland., s.a. 1030, 25; similarly in Ann. Elmarenses, s.a. 1030, 90, Ann. Formos., s.a. 1031, 126]. Her claimed epitaph, which gives a death date of 21 February (9. kal. Mar.), reads as follows: "Preteriens miserere mei, qui vis misereri, / Atque mihi requiem tu deposce piam. / Nona dies Martis me sustulit ante kalendas, / Odgiva iuncta fui Balduino domino." [MGH Poet. Lat. 5: 300]. The necrology of St. Michael, Lüneburg, has an entry "Gera com" under 21 February, which Althoff would interpret as "Geva com", and assign to Otgive, noting that her husband Baldwin IV also appears in the necrology [Althoff (1984), 391 (G 17), 399 (G 55)].
Father: Either Frédéric (d. 1019) or Giselbert (d. 1004), both sons of Sigefroid "of Luxemburg". Otgive's parentage is discussed in detail below in the Commentary section.
Mother: Unknown. Her identity would clearly depend on whether Otgive's father was Frédéric or Giselbert.
Paternal grandfather: Sigefroid/Siegfried "of Luxemburg". Despite the uncertainty regarding her father, both of the plausible candidates were sons of Sigefroid.
Spouse: Baldwin IV, d. 29 or 30 May 1035, count of Flanders.
    Child: MALE Baldwin V, d. 1 September 1067, count of Flanders. http://sbaldw.home.mindspring.com/hproject/prov/otgiv000.htm

FRIEDRICH, son of SIEGFRIED Comte [de Luxembourg] & his wife Hedwig --- (-6 Oct 1019).¬â€  "Domna Berta, viri illustris Volcmari comitis relicta" donated property "in pago Moselensi in comitatu Waldeleuinga cui Gisilbertus comes·Ä¶villa Mudenfert" to St Maximin, Trier by charter dated 996 witnessed by "Friderich comes"[86].¬â€  Herimannus names "Theoderico Metense episcopo et Heinrico Baiori√¶ duce Fridericoque comite" as brothers of "Adalbero clericus, regin√¶ Cunigundis germanus", when recording their rebellion against Emperor Heinrich II in 1008[87].¬â€  The Annales Quedlinburgenses record the death in 1019 of "Fridericus, frater Cunigund√¶ imperatricis"[88].¬â€  Graf im Moselgau.¬â€  Vogt of Stablo and Malm√©dy.¬â€
m [as her second husband,] --- [von Hammerstein], [widow of --- von Gleiberg,] daughter of HERIBERT Graf im Kinziggau Pfalzgraf [Konradiner] & his wife Imiza [Irmintrudis] --- ([970/85]-).¬â€  The parentage of the wife of Graf Friedrich is suggested by the Vita Adelheidis which names "Irminthrudis, Alverad [et] Berthrada" as the three sisters of Adelheid, and daughters of "Megengoz" and his wife, specifying that Irminthrudis was grandmother of [three of the sons of Graf Friedrich, shown below] "Heinrici magnifici ducis et Adhelberonis Metensis episcopi, Friderici ducis"[89].¬â€  The possibility of this person¬¥s earlier otherwise unrecorded marriage is suggested by the Genealogia Welforum which names [this person¬¥s daughter] "Salice---de Glizperch Imizam nomine, Heinrici Noricorum ducis sororem et Friderici ducis Lotharingorum et Alberonis Metensis episcopi" as wife of Welf [II] Graf von Altdorf (see below)[90].¬â€  The reference to ·ÄúGlizperch·Äù represents the earliest indication of a relationship between the Luxembourg family and the Grafen von Gleiberg (see the document FRANCONIA NOBILITY).¬â€  One possibility is that the wife of Graf Friedrich was heiress of Gleiberg.¬â€  However, Irmtrud/Imiza is the only one of the siblings shown below in relation to whom a reference to Gleiberg has been found.¬â€  This raises the interesting possibility that Irmtrud/Imiza, while sharing the same mother as the three brothers named in the Genealogia Welforum, may have been born from a different father who presumably held Gleiberg.¬â€  It should be emphasised that this suggestion is highly speculative.¬â€  Another indication of a Gleiberg/Luxembourg family connection is provided by Bernold¬¥s Chronicon which records in 1059 that ·ÄúFridericus et fratres eius de Glichberga·Äù rebelled against ·ÄúHeinrico regi·Äù[91].¬â€  It is not known which of Friedrich¬¥s brothers may have been ·Äúvon Gleiberg·Äù.¬â€  Another possible indication of the family origin of the wife of Graf Friedrich is provided by the Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines which records that "comes Letardus de Longui pater Manegaudi et Gislebertus comes de Luscelenburch" were "nepotes" of Emperor Konrad II[92].¬â€  The precise family relationships between these three persons have not been traced, but it is possible that Giselbert was related to the emperor through his mother¬¥s family, which had many Franconian connections.¬â€
Graf Friedrich & his wife had [ten] children:¬â€
1.¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  [IRMTRUD [Imiza] (-after 2 Aug 1055, bur Altom√ºnster).¬â€  The Genealogia Welforum names "Salice---de Glizperch Imizam nomine, Heinrici Noricorum ducis sororem et Friderici ducis Lotharingorum et Alberonis Metensis episcopi" as wife of Welf, specifying that her dowry was "villam Moringen et Elisinam curtem in Longobardia"[93].¬â€  The possibility that Irmtrud/Imiza was ·ÄúGleiberg·Äù not ·ÄúLuxembourg·Äù, born from an otherwise unrecorded earlier marriage of her mother, is discussed above.¬â€  Jordan suggests that the land in Lombardy was probably near Este[94].¬â€  A codex of Kloster Weingarten records that "dux Welfo·Ä¶cum uxore sua Irmindrude·Ä¶de Glizberc" transferred Kloster Altorf "super montem"[95].¬â€  The estimated date of her marriage suggests that Irmtrud was one of her parents¬¥ older children.¬â€  m ([1015]) WELF [II] Graf von Altdorf, son of RUDOLF Graf von Altdorf & his wife Ita von √ñhningen [Konradiner] (-10 Mar 1030, bur Altdorf).]¬â€
2.¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  OGIVE (-21 Feb or 9 Mar 1030, bur Gent St Peter).¬â€  The Genealogica Comitum Flandri√¶ Bertiniana names "filiam Gisleberti comitis Odgivam" as wife of "Balduinum Barbatum"[96].¬â€  ·ÄúGisleberti·Äù in this source is presumably an error for ·ÄúFriderici·Äù.¬â€  As noted above, Giselbert brother of Friedrich was recorded as a ·Äúyouth·Äù when he was killed in battle in 1004.¬â€  It is not impossible that he was married with a young child at the time.¬â€  However, another version of the Genealogica Comitum Flandri√¶ names "Adalberto Metensis episcopus, Fredericus dux Lotharingie, Henricus dux Baioarie, Gislebertus comes de Salinis" as brothers of Baudouin¬¥s wife[97].¬â€  It is unlikely that the ·Äúyouth·Äù Giselbert was the father of five children when he died.¬â€  In addition, other primary sources confirm that the brothers Heinrich and Adalbero were sons of Friedrich.¬â€  It is probable therefore that Ogive was also Friedrich¬¥s daughter.¬â€  The date of her marriage suggests that Ogive was one of her parents¬¥ older children.¬â€  The marriage was presumably arranged by Emperor Heinrich II as part of the alliance negotiated in 1012.¬â€  Her name is confirmed by the Annales Blandinienses which record the death in 1030 of "Odgiva comitissa"[98].¬â€  The Memorial of "Odgiva·Ä¶Balduino domino" records her death "IX Mar"[99].¬â€  m ([1012]) as his first wife, BAUDOUIN IV "le Barbu/Pulchrae Barbae" Count of Flanders, son of ARNOUL II ·Äúle Jeune·Äù Count of Flanders & his wife Rozala di Ivrea [Italy] ([980]-30 May 1035).¬â€

4.¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  FRIEDRICH (-28 Aug 1065, bur Stablo).¬â€  The Vita Adelheidis names "Heinrici magnifici ducis et Adhelberonis Metensis episcopi, Friderici ducis fratrumque suorum" as grandsons of "Irminthrudis", daughter of Megingoz[109].¬â€  One version of the Genealogica Comitum Flandri√¶ names "...Fredericus dux Lotharingie..." as one of the brothers of Ogive when recording her marriage[110].¬â€  Avocat of Stavelot: an undated charter, recording the meeting in May 1033 at Deville between Emperor Konrad III and Henri I King of France, records ·Äúsuper bono sancti Remacli [=Stablo]...comite Frederico·Äù [brother of ·Äúcomite Heinrico·Äù, so identified as Friedrich/Fr√©d√©ric de Luxembourg][111].¬â€  "·Ä¶Friderico comite eiusque fratribus, Gisilberto et Theoderico·Ä¶" were among the witnesses of the testament dated 12 Nov 1036 left by "Adalbero·Ä¶prepositus S Paulini Treuerensis, dominus de Ruscheio, de Serico, de Sarburch et de Berincastel", who was their paternal uncle[112].¬â€  He was installed by Heinrich III King of Germany as FREDERIC Duke of Lower Lotharingia: the Herimanni Augiensis Chronicon records in 1046 that ·ÄúFridericus frater Heinrici ducis Baioari√¶·Äù was installed as ·Äúdux Lotharingorum·Äù in place of ·ÄúGotefridi fratre ignavo Gozzilone·Äù[113].¬â€  The Annales Altahenses record in 1046 that the duchy was removed from "Gozziloni" and granted to "Friderico, Baioari√¶ ducis fratri"[114].¬â€  Emperor Heinrich III donated property ·Äúin villa Apinis [Epen] in comitatu Friderici ducis in pago Maselant·Äù to Kloster Burtscheid by charter dated 11 Jul 1056[115].¬â€  Ekkehard¬¥s Chronicon Wirziburgense records that ·ÄúFridericus et fratres eius·Äù attacked ·ÄúGermani√¶ partibus...contra imperium Romanum·Äù but were defeated by ·ÄúAgnete imperatoris et principibus regni·Äù, dated to 1057[116].¬â€  ·ÄúFredericus...Lothariencium dux·Äù donated a serf to Saint-Trond by charter dated 1059, witnessed by ·ÄúGisleberti de Orcismunt, Ottonis advocati et fratris eius Emmonis comitis de Los, Alberti comitis de Musal·Äù[117].¬â€  Bernold¬¥s Chronicon records in 1059 that ·ÄúFridericus et fratres eius de Glichberga·Äù rebelled against ·ÄúHeinrico regi·Äù[118].¬â€  Avocat of Saint-Trond: the Gesta Abbatem Trudonensium records in 1060 that ·ÄúTheoderico [error for Federico]...dux Lotharie·Äù was made ·Äúadvocatus huius opidi·Äù in place of "Ottonem comitem Durachii, fratrem Emmonis comitis de Los", while an earlier passage records the presence in the same year of ·ÄúTheoderico duce Lotharingi√¶...advocato...et Ottoni comite Durachii subadvocato·Äù in a charter [the same as the following donation][119].¬â€  ·ÄúAdvocati ducis Friderici, subadvocati comitis Ottonis...·Äù witnessed the charter dated 1060 under which Alberon Bishop of Metz confirmed his predecessors donations to Saint-Trond[120].¬â€  A charter dated 30 Aug 1067 records that "Dux Fredericus et Stabulensis advocatus" donated ·Äúecclesiam de Sprimont et allodium...Genape·Äù to Stablo abbey, after the death of ·ÄúGerberga uxore mea·Äù from whom was derived his rights to the property[121].¬â€  The burials of Fr√©d√©ric and his first wife Gerberge are confirmed by a charter of Stablo dated 30 Aug 1067[122].¬â€  m firstly GERBERGE de Boulogne, daughter of EUSTACHE [I] Comte de Boulogne & his wife Mathilde de Louvain ([1015/30]-before 1059, bur Stablo).¬â€  The Genealogica ex Stirpe Sancti Arnulfi names "Gerbergam, Friderici ducis uxorem" as daughter of "Mathildis filia Gerberge"[123].¬â€  Her suggested birth date is estimated very approximately to test the chronology of her descendants.¬â€  A charter dated 30 Aug 1067 records that "Dux Fredericus et Stabulensis advocatus" donated ·Äúecclesiam de Sprimont et allodium...Genape·Äù to Stablo abbey, after the death of ·ÄúGerberga uxore mea·Äù from whom was derived his rights to the property[124].¬â€  The burials of Fr√©d√©ric and his first wife Gerberge are confirmed by a charter of Stablo dated 30 Aug 1067[125].¬â€  m secondly as her first husband, IDA of Saxony heiress of La Roche in the Ardennes, daughter of BERNHARD II Duke in Saxony [Billung] & his wife Eilika von Schweinfurt (-31 Jul 1102, bur Namur).¬â€  "Ida" is named as wife of "Albertus comes Namucensis" in the Chronicon Sancti Huberti, which specifies that "prius fuerat uxor ducis Frederici", but her origin is not given[126].¬â€  The Genealogia ex stirpe Sancti Arnulfi names "Idam Namucensem·Ä¶uxorem Angelberti marchionis et Gertrudem comitissam Flandrensem" as children of "Bernardum"[127].¬â€  She married secondly ([1065/66]) Albert III Comte de Namur.¬â€  Friedrich & his first wife had [two] children:
a)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  [daughter ([1030/45]-after 1065).¬â€  The existence of this person is speculative: she is not named in any suriviving primary sources.¬â€  As explained in the document LIMBURG, there are two alternative cases which explain the ancestry of Hendrik [I] Graaf van Limburg.¬â€  In each case, a possible marriage of Udo Graaf van Limburg helps explain the hypotheses.¬â€  In Alternative (1), Hendrik would have been the son of Wal√©ran [II] Comte d·ÄôArlon.¬â€  Consistent with this alternative, an explanation is needed for Hendrik·Äôs predecessor in Limburg, Udo, having succeeded Fr√©d√©ric de Luxembourg Duke of Lower Lotharingia both in Limburg and in the advocacy of Saint-Trond.¬â€  A marriage between Udo and an otherwise unrecorded older daughter of Duke Fr√©d√©ric provides one possible explanation.¬â€  If this case, Udo would have married before he was named at Limburg in 1061, and presumably his supposed wife would have been alive in 1065 when Udo succeeded as avocat of Saint-Trond.¬â€  For hyperlinking purposes only, this case would be: m ([before 1061]) Udo Graaf van Limburg, son of --- (-[1065/75] or 1078).]¬â€
b)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  JUTTA [Judith] .¬â€  Jutta is named, as shown below, as the daughter of Fr√©d√©ric de Luxembourg Duke of Lower Lotharingia and as the mother of Hendrik [I] Graaf van Limburg but the identity of her husband is open to doubt.¬â€  The question revolves around how Hendrik [I] inherited the county of Arlon, Judith and her husband forming part of the overall picture.¬â€  Two alternative cases explaining Hendrik·Äôs Arlon inheritance are set out in detail in the document LIMBURG.¬â€  Both cases confirm that Jutta was Hendrik·Äôs mother, but the conclusions concerning his father are different:
Under Alternative (1) of these two cases, Hendrik would have been the son of Wal√©ran [II] Comte d·ÄôArlon.¬â€  This case is based on the Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines which records that "Henricus Lembergensis qui ducatum perdidit" [=Graaf Hendrik] was "filius...antiqui Walerani", an earlier passage in the same source naming ·ÄúAdela comitissa Arelung vel Areleonis...soror Sigifridi [error for Friderici] filia...ducis Theoderici·Äù and her two sons ·ÄúFulconem et Galeranum·Äù, noting that Wal√©ran ·Äúper uxorem suam·Äù [unnamed] had "dominium ultra Mosam prope Leodium" and built ·Äúcastrum de Lemburch·Äù[128].¬â€  This text is consistent with a later part of the Genealogica ex Stirpe Sancti Arnulfi which records that "Gerberga soror Eustachii comitis, ex Friderico duce·Äù [Fr√©d√©ric de Luxembourg Duke of Lower Lotharingia] gave birth to ·Äúfiliam Iuttam·Äù who was mother of ·ÄúHenricum de Lemburc·Äù[129], but does not name Jutta·Äôs husband.¬â€  Reading these two sources together, Jutta would have married Wal√©ran [II] Comte d'Arlon, son of Wal√©ran [I] Comte d·ÄôArlon & his wife Adelais de Lotharingia ([1015/30]-after [1084/85]).¬â€  Hendrik would then have inherited Limburg from his mother and Arlon from his father.¬â€
Under Alternative (2), Hendrik [I] would have acquired Arlon from his wife, who was heiress of the county.¬â€  In that hypothesis, he had no direct Arlon ancestry. His father could not therefore have been Wal√©ran [II] Comte d·ÄôArlon.¬â€  This case is based on the Gesta Treverorum which records that "comitissa de castello·Ä¶Aralun√¶, mater...comitum Walramni et Folconis·Äù [mother of Wal√©ran [II] Comte d·ÄôArlon] donated property to Trier after her husband died and that "huius comitissa neptem, filii filiam" [daughter of Wal√©ran, or of his brother Foulques, or of another otherwise unrecorded brother] married "Heinricus dux·Ä¶Lempurch" with ·Äúcastellum...Lempurch·Äù as her dowry[130].¬â€  It should be noted that the last part of this extract from the Gesta cannot be accurate as Hendrik·Äôs wife could have had no Limburg ancestry under this Alternative (2).¬â€  No source identities Jutta·Äôs husband.¬â€  Kupper suggests that he was Udo Graaf van Limburg[131] (for hyperlinking purposes only, this case would be: Udo Graaf van Limburg, son of ---).¬â€  Kupper·Äôs hypothesis is not entirely satisfactory.¬â€  While this possible identification is an obvious one as Udo was Hendrik·Äôs immediate predecessor in Limburg, Hendrik inherited Limburg from his mother whoever his father was.¬â€  In addition, the absence of the name Udo among Hendrik·Äôs known descendants also appears to suggest some doubt about this possible identification of Jutta·Äôs husband.¬â€  A further point is that, after Udo died, Hendrik did not inherit the advocacy of Saint-Trond, which passed to Otto de Looz Comte de Duras (who had been sous-avocat under Udo, see the document LOWER LOTHARINGIA NOBILITY).¬â€  The advocacy in fact passed from Otto·Äôs son Giselbert to Hendrik·Äôs son Walram in [1124/27], which suggests the resolution of a long-standing dispute which may be understandable if Hendrik·Äôs right was not inherited from Udo in a direct line.¬â€
5.¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  ADALBERO (-13 Nov 1072, bur Metz Saint-Sauveur).¬â€  His parentage is confirmed by the Vita of Pope Leo IX which names "duo Adalberones contribules sui...prior...ducis...Theodorici filius, alter...Hezilonis ducis germanus ac Frederici...principis natus"[132].¬â€  The Vita Adelheidis names "Heinrici magnifici ducis et Adhelberonis Metensis episcopi, Friderici ducis fratrumque suorum" as grandsons of "Irminthrudis", daughter of Megingoz[133].¬â€  One version of the Genealogica Comitum Flandri√¶ names "Adalberto Metensis episcopus..." as one of the brothers of Ogive when recording her marriage[134].¬â€  Bishop of Metz 1047.¬â€  The Gesta Abbatem Trudonensium records that, after the death of "domnus Theodericus secundus huius nominis, Metensis episcopus" in 1048 "Adelbero eius consanguineus, nepos Adelberonis tercii huius nominis ex fratre Theoderico duce Lotharingie seu Mosellorum" succeeded as Bishop of Metz[135].¬â€  A later passage names "Adelberonis Metensis episcoporum" as brother of "Theoderico duce Lotharingie seu Mosellanorum" specifying that he was installed in 1060 as advocatus of St Trudo, the following passage naming "Fredericum ducem" so clarifying that the earlier reference was a mistake for Friedrich[136].¬â€
6.¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  GISELBERT (-14 Aug [1056/59]).¬â€  "·Ä¶Friderico comite eiusque fratribus, Gisilberto et Theoderico·Ä¶" were among the witnesses of the testament dated 12 Nov 1036 left by "Adalbero·Ä¶prepositus S Paulini Treuerensis, dominus de Ruscheio, de Serico, de Sarburch et de Berincastel", who was their paternal uncle[137].¬â€  The primary source which confirms that Friedrich was the father of the three brothers has not yet been identified.¬â€  Graf von Salm: an exchange of property between the abbeys of St Maximin and Malm√©dy by charter dated 1035 is witnessed by "comes Gislebertus de Salmo"[138].¬â€  One version of the Genealogica Comitum Flandri√¶ names "...Gislebertus comes de Salinis" as one of the brothers of Ogive when recording her marriage[139].¬â€  Gade speculates that Giselbert obtained Salm by marriage[140].¬â€  Referred to as "comes de castello Lucelinburg" and "Gilbertus Luceburgenses comes", he succeeded his brother in 1047 as Comte de [Luxembourg].¬â€  Gade states that he was "a wild, warlike man who seized every opportunity to increase his power", he seized land from the abbeys of Echternach and St Maximin, in the district of Köln and from Poppo Archbishop of Trier[141].¬â€  Vogt of St Maximin at Trier and of Echternach.¬â€  He was killed in an uprising in Italy[142].¬â€  m [as her second husband,] ---, [widow of ---], daughter of ---.¬â€  The name of Giselbert's wife is not known.¬â€  Her two marriages are suggested by the Chronicon of Marianus Scottus which records the election of [her son] ·ÄúCuonradi fratrem Herimannum, Heinrici de Lacha fratris filium·Äù as king of Germany[143].¬â€  As noted below, this interpretation (by which Conrad Comte [de Luxembourg] and Hermann [anti] King of Germany would have been uterine not full brothers) provides one means of reconciling the two statements in this source which otherwise appear contradictory.¬â€  In addition, if this hypothesis is correct, this person (whose parentage is unidentified) could have been heiress of Salm, which passed firstly to her second husband during their marriage and secondly, after his death, to her son by her first husband.¬â€  It should be noted that Gade also speculated that Giselbert obtained Salm through his marriage[144].¬â€  The family relationship between King Hermann and Conrad Comte de Luxembourg is also indicated by the Chronicon of Bernold which records the death in 1086 of "Chonradus comes, frater Heremanni regis" while on pilgrimage to Jerusalem[145].¬â€  Giselbert & his wife had [three] children:¬â€
    a)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  CONRAD (-in Palestine 8 Aug 1086, bur [1090 Luxembourg M√ºnster Abbey]).¬â€  The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines names "comitis Conradis" as son of "Gislebertus comes de Luscelenburch"[146].¬â€  Vogt of St Maximin at Trier and of Stablo.¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€
    -¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  see below.¬â€
b)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  [JUDITH von Salm .¬â€  According to Europ√§ische Stammtafeln, "Judith von Salm", supposedly daughter of Giselbert Graf von Salm [Wigerich], was the wife of "[Udo] van Limburg", and this couple were the parents of Hendrik Graaf van Limburg[147]. ¬â€ The primary source which confirms this proposition has not yet been identified.¬â€  On the basis of the information so far found in primary sources, it is unlikely that this supposed couple existed.¬â€  The reasoning is set out in the document LIMBURG and need not be repeated here.¬â€  m [UDO] van Limburg, son of ---.]¬â€
c)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  [daughter .¬â€  Her parentage and marriage are indicated by the charter dated 1088 under which her daughter "Regina ex prosapia non obscura·Ä¶comitis Cononis filia qui frater extit Conraldi viri·Ä¶in itinere Jerosolimitano defuncti, generi nimirum comitis Pictaviensis" donated property to the abbey of Marcigny-sur-Loire for the foundation of the priory of Aiwaille[148].¬â€  Fabri identifies "Conradi" as Conrad Comte de Luxembourg, suggesting that "frater" should be interpreted to indicate brother-in-law[149].¬â€  If the speculation relating to the two possible marriages of Giselbert¬¥s wife is correct as suggested above, ·Äúfrater·Äù could also indicate uterine brother, in which case Kuno¬¥s wife may have been the full sister of Hermann [anti] King of Germany.¬â€  m KUNO Graf von Oltingen, son of BUCCO Graf von Oltingen & his wife ---.]¬â€
