Gerald FitzWalter
Gender:
Male
Birth:
circa 1075
Windsor, Windsor and Maidenhead, England (present UK)
Death:
before circa 1136
Castle Carew, Pembroke, Pembrokeshire, Wales (present UK)
Place of Burial:
Tenby, Pembrokeshire, England
Immediate Family:
Son of Walter FitzOtho, Castellan of Windsor and Beatrice de Offley
Husband of Nest verch Rhys
Father of David FitzGerald, Bishop of St. David'S; William FitzGerald, Baron of Windsor and Pembroke; Maurice FitzGerald, Lord of Lanstephan; Angharad FitzGerald; Nn de Windsor; Gledewis de Cogan and Hadewise de Hastings ¬´ less
Brother of William FitzWalter de Windsor, Constable of Windsor, Keeper of Windsor Forest; Maurice FitzWalter; Walter FitzWalter de Windsor; Robert FitzWalter, of Windsor, Sheriff Of Norfolk and Delicia (FitzOtho)

Gerald married Nest ferch Rhys ("Nesta") a Welsh princess, daughter of Rhys ap Tewdwr, the last king of Deheubarth in Wales. Nest brought the manor of Carew as part of her dowry, and Gerald cleared the existing fort to build his own castle along Norman lines.[12] They had five children:
·Ä¢William FitzGerald, Lord of Carew and Emlyn
·Ä¢Maurice FitzGerald, Lord of Llanstephan
·Ä¢David FitzGerald, Bishop of St. David's
·Ä¢Angharad
·Ä¢Gwladys
In 1109 his wife Nesta was abducted by her second cousin Owain ap Cadwgan. According to the Brut y Tywysogion, Owain and his men entered the couple's home (assumed by historians to have been either Cilgerran Castle or Little Cenarch) and set fire to the buildings. When Gerald was awoken by the noise, Nesta urged him to escape by climbing out through the drain-hole of the garderobe. Owain then seized Nesta and her children and carried her off. Some sources, however, suggest that she went with him willingly.
Gerald's influence was such that due to Nesta's abduction Owain and his father soon lost much of their territory of Powys. Owain himself was obliged to go into exile in Ireland and when he returned in 1116, he was killed when his retinue of fifty men at arms was cunningly attacked by Gerald and his large cohort as they both traveled to aid the king of England.[13]
Gerald's son William had a daughter named Isabella Le Gros,[citation needed] who married William De Haya Walensis, by whom she had sons David Walensis and Philip Walensis. David and Philip were surnamed in Latin Walensis ("of Wales"), and were the founders of the widespread family surnamed Welsh or Walsh or Wallace. Philip Walensis had a son named Howell of Welsh Walensis.
Nesta is the female progenitor of the Fitzgerald Dynasty, and through her the Fitzgeralds are related to Welsh royalty and to the Tudors (Tewdwrs). The Tudors are descended from Nest's father Rhys ap Tewdwr (Anglicized to "Tudor"). Henry Tudor, King of England, was a patrilineal descendant of Rhys ap Tewdwr. Consequently, Gerald and Nest's offspring, the Fitzgeralds, are distant cousins to the English Tudors.

Gerald de Windsor (c. 1075·Äì1135), alias Gerald FitzWalter, was the first castellan of Pembroke Castle in Pembrokeshire (formerly part of the Kingdom of Deheubarth), in Wales, and was in charge of the Norman forces in southwest Wales. He was the ancestor of the FitzGerald , FitzMaurice and De Barry dynasties of Ireland, who were elevated to the Peerage of Ireland in the 14th century and was also the ancestor of the prominent Carew family, of Moulsford in Berkshire, Carew Castle in Pembrokeshire (in the Kingdom of Deheubarth) and of Mohuns Ottery in Devon (see Baron Carew, Earl of Totnes and Carew baronets). - See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_de_Windsor

Gerald de Windsor (c. 1075 - 1135), or Gerald FitzWalter of Windsor, was the first castellan of Pembroke Castle in Dyfed in the late 11th and early 12th centuries, and the Norman chieftain in charge of the Norman forces in southwest Wales. He was the progenitor and eponymous ancestor of the FitzGerald and de Barry dynasties of Ireland, who were elevated to the ranks of peers of Ireland in the 14th century.
Gerald's wife Nest ferch Rhys was a Welsh princess, daughter of Rhys ap Tewdwr, last King of Deheubarth. Nest is the female progenitor of the Fitzgerald Dynasty, and through her the Fitzgeralds are related to Welsh royalty and to the Tudors (Tewdwrs). The Tudors are descended from Nest's father Rhys ap Tewdwr (Anglicized to "Tudor"). Henry Tudor, King of England, was a matrilineal descendant of Rhys ap Tewdwr. Consequently, Gerald and Nest's offspring, the Fitzgeralds, are distant cousins to the English Tudors.

Gerald was most likely born at Windsor, then a strategically placed motte-and-bailey fortress on the Thames, hence his sobriquet "de Windsor". He was a younger son of Walter FitzOtho by his wife, Beatrice. Walter fitz Otho was a Norman in the following of William the Conqueror, the first castellan of the strategic fortress of Windsor and Keeper of its Forest, entrusted to him upon its completion by the Conqueror. Gerald had at least three older brothers, William, Robert, and Maurice, and possibly several sisters as well.
Several genealogies give Gerald's ancestors as the "Gherardinis" of Italy and claim for him descent from a spurious 9th century "Duke Cosimo of Tuscany", all accounts of which are based upon the efforts of a 17th-century FitzGerald earl of Kildare anxious to aggrandise his family name and, possibly, elide any Anglo-Norman connexions. Several facts preclude this spurious genealogy: there was no Duchy of Tuscany in the 9th century; the duchy did not exist before the latter half of the 16th century; the only two Dukes of Tuscany named Cosimo lived in the 16th and 17th centuries, and both were Medicis. Some modern online genealogies give Gerald's mother as either Gwladys ferch Ryall of Gwynedd or Gwladys ferch Rhiwallon ap Cynfyn of Powys; again this is precluded by facts: Domesday listings pertaining to the properties of Walter FitzOther list his wife as Beatrice.[1] "Gwladys ferch Ryall of Gwynedd" appears nowhere in Welsh geneaologies. Gwladys ferch Rhiwallon ap Cynfyn of Powys was, in fact, the wife of Rhys ap Tewdwr, the last King of Deheubarth, and Gerald's royal mother-in-law.

Arnulf was deprived of his estates and exiled by Henry I in 1102, and the King granted the custody of Pembroke Castle to Gerald.
He married Nest, daughter of Rhys ap Tudor Mawr, PRINCE OF SOUTH WALES (e). The date of his death is not known, presumably before 1136. [Complete Peerage X:10-11, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
(e) In 1106, when Owen ap Cadugan carried her off, two of her sons and a daughter by Gerald de Windsor were taken with her, the sons being returned later to their father. By Stephen, constable of Cardigan (query after Gerald's death), Nest bore a son, Robert FitzStephen, and by Henry I a son Henry (killed 1158), father of Meiler FitzHenry, which Robert and Meiler were later brothers-in-arms of the Geraldines in Ireland. For the descendants of Gerald and Nest see chart pedigree sub Kerry. Their 3rd son was David II, Bishop of St. Davids; and their daughter Angharad (or Ankaret) was, by William de Barri of Manorbier, mother of sons, among whom was Gerald de Barri, otherwise Giraldus Cambrensis, who Expugnatio Hibernica is one of the principal sources of information about the Norman conquest of Ireland by his uncles and cousins and their companions in adventure.
