ADALBERT ([990/994]-26 May 1055, bur Stift Melk).¬â€  A list of names in the Verbr√ºderungsbuch of Reichenau abbey reads "Luitpold marches, Rihuuar, Iudita, Heinrich, Ernust, Poppo, Luitpold, Cunigurrt, Adalbr"[61], which appears to refer to Markgraf Liutpold, his wife and children.¬â€  The primary sources are contradictory regarding the parentage of Markgraf Adalbert.¬â€  The Auctarium Vindobonense names "Adalbertus tertius marchio Austria", but does not specify his relationship with his predecessor[62].¬â€  The Altahense Annales record the sudden death in 1018 of "Heinricus marchio Austria" and specify that he was succeeded by "Adalbertus filius eius"[63].¬â€  However, the Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines name "Ernesto duci Suevorum, fratri Alberti superioris Pannonis marchionis et archiepiscopi Treverensis Popponis"[64].¬â€  As shown above, Thietmar records both Ernst Duke of Swabia and Poppo Archbishop of Trier as sons of Markgraf Liutpold[65].¬â€  The necrology of Kloster Neuburg records the death "VII Kal Jun" of "Adalbertus marchio filius Heinrici marchionis"[66], apparently confirming the parentage set out in the Atahense Annales.¬â€  On the other hand, the necrology of Melk records the death "XVI Kal Mar" of "Poppo archieps Treverensis fr Heinrici marchionis"[67].¬â€  On balance, more primary sources indicate that Adalbert was the son of Markgraf Liutpold rather than of Markgraf Heinrich.¬â€  His estimated birth date range is based on the birth date range estimated for his older son, with the death of Markgraf Liutpold in 994 representing the later limit of this range on the assumption that Adalbert was his son. ¬â€ Just to confuse the question of Adalbert's parentage even further, it should be noted that this range would not be inconsistent with Adalbert having been the son of Markgraf Heinrich.¬â€  Graf im Schweinach 1010.¬â€  Graf im K√ºnzig 1011.¬â€  He succeeded his brother in 1018 as ADALBERT "der Siegreiche" Markgraf der Ostmark [of Austria].¬â€  The necrology of Salzburg St Rudpert records the death "VII Kal Jun" of "Adalpreht marchio"[68].¬â€  The necrology of Melk records the death "VII Kal Jun" of "Adalbertus marchio"[69].¬â€  m firstly (before [1020/25]) --- (-before 1041).¬â€  Markgraf Adalbert's first marriage is deduced from the estimated birth date range of his older son Liutpold.¬â€  The identity of this first wife of Markgraf Adalbert is unknown.¬â€  She has been identified as Glismod ---, daughter of Immed Graf in Utrecht & his wife Adela [von Hamaland][70].¬â€  This is presumably based on the Annales Stadenses which name "Lippoldo filio domine Glismodis" as husband of "Ida [de Elsthorpe]"[71].¬â€  "Lippoldo" has been assumed to be Liutpold Margraf der Ungarischen Mark, son of Markgraf Adalbert, but this appears to be impossible if Ida von Elstorf had four children by her first husband[72].¬â€  The only definite information concerning Glismod's husband is found in the Vita Meinwerci which names "Thiedericum, Meinwercum, Glismod et Azelam" as children of Immed and Athela and specifies that Glismod married "nobilis principis in Baioaria"[73].¬â€  Another possibility is that her name was Adelheid.¬â€  The necrology of Melk records the death "VII Kal Feb" of "Adalheida marchionissa ux Adalberti marchionis Austrie"[74].¬â€  At first sight, "Adalberti" has assumed to be an error for "Ernesti" as the latter's wife is the only known "marchionissa" of that name.¬â€  However, the entry may alternatively refer to the otherwise unknown first wife of Markgraf Adalbert.¬â€  The necrology of Kloster Neuburg also records the death "VII Kal Feb" of "Adelheidis marchionissa"[75] but does not name her husband.¬â€  m secondly (shortly before 1041) FROIZZA [Frowila] Orseolo, daughter of PIETRO OTTONE Orseolo Doge of Venice & his wife [Grimelda or Maria] of Hungary ([1015]-17 Feb 1071, bur Melk).¬â€  Herimannus refers to "sororis su√¶ [=Peterum regem]" as wife of "marchionem nostrum Adalbertum" when recording her marriage in 1041[76].¬â€  She is named in three imperial charters, although these are not consistent about the spelling of her name.¬â€ ¬â€  "Heinricus·Ä¶Romanorum imperator augustus" granted property "in circuitu duorum fluminum·Ä¶Zaiouua" to "marchioni Adalberto et coniugi su√¶ (Froiza)" by charter dated 21 Apr 1048[77].¬â€  "Heinricus·Ä¶Romanorum imperator augustus" granted property to "Adelberti marchionis [et] uxorique sue Froize" dated 12 Nov 1051"[78]. ¬â€ "Heinricus·Ä¶rex" granted property "in locis Ortvvinesdorf et Pirchehe·Ä¶in marcha Osterriche et in comitatu Ernestes marchionis" to "Frovvil√¶ Adeberti marhchionis vidu√¶" by charter dated 1 Oct 1058[79].¬â€  The necrology of Melk records the death "XIII Kal Mar" of "Frouza marchionissa"[80].¬â€  The necrology of Kloster Neuburg records the death "XIII Kal Mar" of "Fruoza marchionissa"[81].¬â€  Markgraf Adalbert & his first wife had two children:
i)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  LIUTPOLD ([1020/25]-Ingelheim 9 Dec 1043, bur Trier).¬â€  Herimannus names "Adalberto marchione et filio eius Liutpaldo" when recording their jointly leading part of the army to the southern Danube area in 1042[82].¬â€  His birth date range is estimated on the assumption that he was a young adult or late adolescent at this time.¬â€  He was installed as Markgraf der Ungarischen Mark in Dec 1043 at Ingelheim[83].¬â€  Herimannus records his installation as marchio, but also his death a few days later[84].¬â€  The Chronicon of Bernold records the death in 1043 of "Liutpaldus Adalberti marchionis filius" at Ingelheim after the marriage of Heinrich III King of Germany and Agnes de Poitou[85].¬â€  The necrology of Melk records the death "V Id Dec" of "Liupoldus fortis mil fil Alberti marchionis"[86].¬â€  The first husband of Ida von "Elstorf", daughter of Liudolf Markgraf in Friesland [Braunschweig] & his wife Gertrud von Egisheim, is identified as Liutpold Markgraf der Ungarischen Mark in Europ√§ischen Stammtafeln[87].¬â€  Presumably this is based firstly on the Annales Stadenses which name "Lippoldo filio domine Glismodis" as husband of "Ida [de Elsthorpe]"[88], and secondly on the Vita Meinwerci which names "Thiedericum, Meinwercum, Glismod et Azelam" as children of Immed and Athela, specifying that Glismod married "nobilis principis in Baioaria"[89], although there is no evidence linking the second with the first.¬â€  The fact that Ida von Elstorf had children by her first husband, if correct, also indicates that that this co-identity cannot be right[90].¬â€  She married secondly Dedo Graf von Dietmarschen, and thirdly Etheler Graf von Dietmarschen.¬â€
ii)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  ERNST (-killed in battle near Homburg/Unstrut 9 Jun 1075, bur Melk).¬â€  The Auctarium Vindobonense names "Ernust filius eius [=Adalbertus] quartus marchio Austrie" when recording that he succeeded his father[91].¬â€  He succeeded his father in 1055 as ERNST Markgraf of Austria.¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€

¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  [IMMED [III] (-27 Jan 983).¬â€  Widukind records that Meinwerk Bishop of Paderborn was "paterno genere a Thiedrico Mathilde regin√¶ fratre"[86].¬â€  Graf in Utrecht.¬â€  ¬â€ The necrologium Abdinhofense records the death "IV Kal Feb" of "Immeth comes pater Meinwerci episocopi"[87].¬â€  m as her first husband, ADELA, daughter of WICHMANN [V] Graaf van Hamaland & his wife Liutgard of Flanders (-22 Mar [1014/16]).¬â€  The Vita Meinwerci names "uxorem de terra Saxoni√¶, Athelam nomine" as wife of Immed[88].¬â€  Widukind records that Meinwerk Bishop of Paderborn was "materno a Wichmanno, Herimanni ducis nepote, propinquo Ottonis I"[89].¬â€  Alpertus names "Adela sorori domn√¶ Liutgard√¶", commenting that Adela was "clamosa in voce, lasciva in verbis, veste composite, animo dissoluta", the subsequent paragraph recording that, after her sister died, Adela took all her property which she had intended for the church before "vidua lasciva" married Baldric as her second husband[90].¬â€  She married secondly (before 996) Baldric Count in Drenthe.¬â€  "Otto·Ä¶Romanorum imperator augustus" confirmed the rights and privileges of Kloster Elten naming "filiam Lutgardam·Ä¶abbatissam [et] filia Adela·Ä¶[et] Baldericus·Ä¶maritus Adele" by charter dated 18 Dec 996[91].¬â€  The wife of "Baldericus" was the daughter of "Wicmanni, cuius maiores magnam partem Germani√¶ et maxime circa littoral oceani imperia tenebant"[92].¬â€  Thietmar records that the wife of Baldric encouraged her husband to arrange for the murder of "Count Wichmann" in 1016[93].¬â€  She is named "Adel√¶ uxoris Baldrici" in a later (undated) passage recording her death[94].¬â€  The work of Thiodericus names "Ida comitissa eius [=Baldricus] coniunx" ("Ida" presumably being an error for "Adela") and records her death "11 Kal Apr" without specifying the year[95].¬â€  Immed [III] & his wife had five children:¬â€
i)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  THEODERICH (-killed Upladen 7 Apr 1014).¬â€  The Vita Meinwerci names "Thiedericum, Meinwercum, Glismod et Azelam" as children of Immed and Athela, specifying that Theoderich succeeded his father, a later passage adding that he was killed "VII Id Apr Uplage urbe" on the orders of his mother[96].¬â€
ii)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  MEINWERK (-5/6 Jun 1036).¬â€  The Vita Meinwerci names "Thiedericum, Meinwercum, Glismod et Azelam" as children of Immed and Athela, specifying that Meinwerk was "in ecclesia beati Stephani protomartiris in civitate Halverstadensi ad clericatus est oblatus"[97].¬â€  Canon at Halberstadt.¬â€  Chaplain at the royal court and canon at St Maria, Aachen 1001/09.¬â€  Bishop of Paderborn 1009.¬â€
iii)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  GLISMOD (-5 Feb before 1041).¬â€  The Vita Meinwerci names "Thiedericum, Meinwercum, Glismod et Azelam" as children of Immed and Athela, specifying that Glismod married "nobilis principis in Baioaria"[98].¬â€  m ---.¬â€  The identity of the husband of Glismod is not known.¬â€  He has been associated with Adalbert "der Siegreiche" Markgraf der Ostmark, son of Liutpold I Markgraf der bayerischen Ostmark, Graf im Traungau, Sundergau und Donaugau & his wife Richwara im Sualafeldgau (-26 May 1055, bur Stift Melk).¬â€  The Annales Stadenses name "Lippoldo filio domine Glismodis" as husband of "Ida [de Elsthorpe]"[99].¬â€ ¬â€  It is unlikely that this refers to Liutpold, son of Markgraf Adalbert, who was installed as Markgraf der Ungarischen Mark in Dec 1043 and died soon afterwards, presumably childless as his younger brother succeeded their father in the Markgrafschaft.¬â€  [One possible child]:¬â€
(a)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  [LIUTPOLD (-[before 1055]).¬â€  The Annales Stadenses name "Lippoldo filio domine Glismodis" as husband of "Ida [de Elsthorpe]"[100].¬â€ ¬â€  Graf von Stade.¬â€  It seems unlikely that Liutpold's mother was the same Glismod who was the daughter of Immed.¬â€  As the Immed died in 983, as it is likely that his daughter's children would have been born [1000/15].¬â€  If Liutpold was one of these children, he would have been considerably older than his wife.¬â€  m as her first husband, IDA von Elstorf, daughter of [LIUDOLF Markgraf in Friesland [Braunschweig] & his wife Gertrud von Egisheim] (-before 4 May 1082).¬â€  The Annales Stadenses name "Ida nobilis femina de Suevia nata, in villa Elsthorpe" as daughter of "fratris imp. Heinrici III, filia sororis Leonis papa qui et Bruno"[101].¬â€  It is probable that Ida was the daughter of Liudolf, who is the only known [half-]brother of Emperor Heinrich III whose wife is not otherwise recorded in other primary sources.¬â€  Elstorf is located west of Hamburg near Buxtehude, south-east of Stade.¬â€  No other reference has been found in primary sources to Elstorf being linked to any medieval noble family.¬â€  The significance of ·Äúvon Elstorf·Äù in this extract from the Annales Stadenses has not been ascertained.¬â€  In particular it is not known whether it represents property held by Ida from her paternal or maternal family or through one of her husbands.¬â€  The Annales Stadenses name "Lippoldo filio domine Glismodis" as husband of "Ida [de Elsthorpe]", specifying that they were parents of "Odam sanctimonialem de Rinthelen"[102].]¬â€  Liutpold & his wife had two children:¬â€
(1)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  ODA (-after 1052).¬â€  The Annales Stadenses name "Odam sanctimonialem de Rinthelen" as daughter of "Lippoldo filio domine Glismodis" and "Ida [de Elsthorpe]", specifying that she married "regi Ruzie" by whom she had a son "Warteslaw", returned to Saxony with her son after her husband died, and there became the mother of "filiam Aliarinam, matrem comitis Burchardi de Lucken" who later killed "lantgravius Hermannus de Wincenburg", although a later passage specifies that Ida was mother of "Akarinam matrem Burchardi de Lucken"[103].¬â€  It has not been possible to verify all this information.¬â€  Baumgarten identifies her first husband as Vladimir Iaroslavich[104].¬â€  The chronology of Oda, daughter of Ida von Elstorf, bearing a son by a husband who died in 1052 is difficult to sustain.¬â€  It is suggested that Oda·Äôs supposed first marriage should be viewed with considerable scepticism.¬â€  [m firstly [VLADIMIR Iaroslavich, son of IAROSLAV I "Mudriy/the Wise" Grand Prince of Kiev & his [second] wife Ingigerd Olafsdottir of Sweden (1020-Novgorod 1052, bur Novgorod Church of St Sophia).] m [secondly] ---.¬â€
(2)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  EKBERT (-murdered Wickstadt, near Elstorf [before 1082]).¬â€  The Annales Stadenses records that Ida [von Elstorf] had "filium Ecbertum comitem" who was killed by "primus Udo marchio...cognatus suus" at ·ÄúWistede prope Elstorpe·Äù, adding that Ida found herself without heirs (·Äúorbata heredibus·Äù), visited ·Äúavunculum suum papam Leonem·Äù (therefore before Apr 1054), and following his recommendation adopted ·Äúipsum Udonem·Äù as her son and appointed him as her heir (listing properties which she granted him during her lifetime), a later passage clarifying that ·Äúpredictum Udonem marchionem primum·Äù was Ida·Äôs successor after she died (·ÄúIda ergo mortua...·Äù)[105].¬â€  This text presents chronological difficulties.¬â€  A literal interpretation of ·Äúprimus Udo marchio·Äù would indicate Lothar Udo [II] Graf von Stade (see the document SAXONY NOBILITY), who succeeded as Markgraf der Nordmark in 1056 and died the following year so could not have been appointed by Ida as her heir.¬â€  Presumably therefore his son Lothar Udo [III], who succeeded his father as Lothar Udo II Markgraf der Nordmark and died in 1082, was intended.¬â€  However, that interpretation is inconsistent with Ida von Elstorf taking advice from her uncle Pope Leo IX (who died in Apr 1054).¬â€  That part of the report must be factually incorrect, the only safe conclusion being that Ekbert predeceased his mother some time before 1082.¬â€  The appointment by Ekbert·Äôs mother of his killer as her heir suggests that the killing was accidental.¬â€
iv)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  ADELA (-after 1027).¬â€  The Vita Meinwerci names "Thiedericum, Meinwercum, Glismod et Azelam" as children of Immed and Athela, specifying that Azela became a nun at "ecclesia martiris Viti Eltene"[106].¬â€  Canoness at Elten.¬â€
v)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€  EMMA (-3 Dec 1038, bur Bremen Cathedral).¬â€  The Vita Meinwerci names "Emma" wife of "comes Liutderus", but does not give her origin[107].¬â€  Her parentage is confirmed by Adam of Bremen who names "Emma" as wife of "Liudgerus frater [Benno dux Saxonum]" when recording her husband's death in 1011, calling her "Emma·Ä¶soror Meginwerki episcopi Padarburnensis" when recording her death and her burial in Bremen Cathedral[108].¬â€  m LIUTGER, son of HERMANN Billung Duke in Saxony & his [first/second] wife [Oda ---/Hildesuit ---] (-1011).¬â€
