FREDERIC, son of WIGERICH [III] Graf [von Bidgau], Pfalzgraf & his wife Cunigonde --- ([910/15]-[Jun/Jul] 978).¬â Duke Frederic's parentage is deduced from the charter of "Otto·Ä¶imperator augustus" dated 3 Jun 960, under which property was donated to Kloster St Petrus at Metz and which names "compater noster Adalbero·Ä¶sanctⶠMettensis ecclesiⶠpresul [et] germano suo Friderico duce"[105], read together with the diploma of Charles III "le Simple" King of the West Franks which granted the abbey of Hastiâ®res to the church of Liâ®ge which names the parents of Adalberon[106].¬â "Friderici, Gisilberti, Sigeberti fratrum predicti Gozlini" subscribed the charter dated 943 which refers to "Gozlines·Ä¶miles·Ä¶ex nobilissimis regni Chlotarii ducens prosapia" and the donation by "uxor eius Uda et filius eius·Ä¶Regingerus" to St Maximin at Trier[107].¬â He constructed the châ¢teau de Bar on land inherited from his wife, triggering protests from Louis IV King of France to Otto I King of Germany (the former considering the area within his sphere of influence) and from the Bishops of Toul (who considered that part of the land belonged to one of his churches)[108].¬â Bruno Duke of Lotharingia, brother of Otto I King of Germany, to whom the latter had granted Lotharingia in 953, created the duchy of Upper Lotharingia in 959 and appointed Frâ©dâ©ric as FREDERIC I [associate] Duke of [Upper] Lotharingia.¬â From the death of Duke Bruno in 965, the duchy was held under the direct authority of Emperor Otto I and his successors.¬â Duke Frâ©dâ©ric attended the grand assembly of nobility and clergy convoked by the emperor at Kââln 2 Jun 965[109].¬â "Fredericus·Ä¶Lothariensium Dux" confirmed donations of property at Murecourt to Bouxiâ®res by charter dated 26 Oct 966, signed by "Teutberti comitis, Lictardi comitis, Widonis comitis·Ä¶"[110].¬â The Franco/German dispute over Lotharingia and Bar was pursued by Lothaire King of France who fought lengthy campaigns to recapture Lotharingia, culminating in the invasion of 978, the capture of Aachen, and the siege of Metz, although the French were forced to retreat by Otto II King of Germany[111].¬â The necrology of Fulda records the death in 978 of "Fridurih dux"[112].¬â
m (betrothed 951, [10 Sep/12 Nov] 954) BEATRIX de France, daughter of HUGUES "le Grand" Duc des Francs & his third wife Hedwig of Germany ([938/39]-23 Sep 1003).¬â Flodoard refers to "Hugonis principis filiam" marrying "Fredericus, frater Adalberonis episcopi" in 954[113].¬â The Gesta Episcoporum Virdunensium names "Beatricis, Hugonis Capitonis Francorum regis sororis" as wife of "ducis Frederici"[114].¬â The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines names "sororem [Otto filius Hugo rex·Ä¶dux Burgundie]·Ä¶Beatricem" as wife of "Fridericus dux Mosellanorum"[115].¬â "Otto·Ä¶imperator augustus" made donations to Notker Bishop of Liâ®ge by charter dated 15 Jun 983 which names "Mettensium episcopus Theodericus noster consanguineus et illustris dux Beatrix nostra consobrina[116].¬â "Otto·Ä¶rex" confirmed the donation to the bishopric of Toul of the abbeys of St Diâ© and Moyenmoutier by "Friderico duce cum coniuge sua Beatrice nepte nostra" dated 984, recording that Duke Frederic was then deceased[117].¬â Beatrix acted as regent of Upper Lotharingia for her son Duke Thierry I from 978 to 987, and took an active part in the government of the duchy.¬â She intervened with her brother Hugues Capet over the capture of her son by French troops during the siege of Verdun in 985, and actively attempted to resolve the Franco/German conflict over Lotharingia by diplomatic means.¬â She was imprisoned in an abbey by her son, who was impatient to assume personal rule but was obliged to release her by the Pope.¬â She visited the monastery of Saint-Diâ© in 1003 with her family[118].¬â
Duke Frederic I & his wife had three children:
1.‰ ‰ ‰ ‰ ‰ ‰ ‰ ‰ HENRI "Hezelin" (-[972/978]).‰ He is named in documents of the abbey of Saint-Mihiel between 8 Sep 962 and 972[119].‰
2.¬â ¬â ¬â ¬â ¬â ¬â ¬â ¬â ADALBERO (-Metz 14 Dec 1005, bur Metz Cathedral, transferred to l'â©glise de l'Abbaye Saint-Symphorien).¬â "Adalberonem filium Beatricis nobilissimⶠductricis, matris Theoderici ducis" is named in the Gesta Episcoporum Virdunensium[120].¬â The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines names (in order) "ducem Theodericum et·Ä¶Alberonem episcopus" as sons of "Fridericus dux Mosellanorum" & his wife Beatrix[121].¬â He was appointed Bishop of Metz 16 Oct 984, enthroned 28 Dec 984[122].¬â The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines records the election of "Adalbero, filius Friderici ducis" as Bishop of Metz in 984[123].¬â He was present at the diet of [1004/05], where he strongly criticised Konrad Duke of Carinthia for his consanguineous marriage, and was forced to return to Lotharingia with his brother[124].¬â A list of bishops of Metz records the death "VI Kal Mar" of "Adalbero", 45th bishop, after holding office for 35 years, 9 months and 25 days[125].¬â
3.¬â ¬â ¬â ¬â ¬â ¬â ¬â ¬â THIERRY ([962/72]-11 Apr 1027).¬â The Chronicon Sancti Michâ¶lis, monasterii in pago Virdunensi names "Theodoricus" son of "Frederico"[126].¬â He succeeded his father in 978 as THIERRY I Duke of Upper Lotharingia.¬â ¬â ¬â

Frederick I (c. 942·Äì978) was the count of Bar and duke of Upper Lorraine. He was a son of Wigeric, count of Bidgau, also count palatine of Lorraine, and Cunigunda, and thus a sixth generation descendant of Charlemagne.
In 954, he married Beatrice, daughter of Hugh the Great, count of Paris, and Hedwige of Saxony. He received in dowry the revenues of the abbey of Saint-Denis in Lorraine. He constructed a fortress at Fains, on the frontier between France and Germany, and exchanged fiefs with the bishop of Toul. Thus, he created his own feudal domain, the county of Bar. So he became the founder of the House of Bar or the House of Ardennes-Bar, a cadet branch of the House of Ardennes.
The duchy of Lorraine was at that time governed by the archbishop of Cologne, Bruno, who was called the archduke on account of his dual title. In 959, he, in concert with his brother, the Emperor Otto I, divided the duchy, appointing as margraves (or vice-dukes) one Godfrey in Lower Lorraine and Frederick in Upper Lorraine. After Bruno's death, in 977, Frederick and Godfrey were styling themselves dukes.
As duke, he favoured the reform of Saint-Diâ© and Moyenmoutier.
His children were:
Henry (died between 972 and 978)
Adalberon II (958·Äì1005), bishop of Verdun and Metz
Thierry I (965·Äì1026), count of Bar and duke of Upper Lorraine
Ida, married Radbod of Altenbourg, who built the castle of Habichtsburg and is thus an ancestor of the great Habsburg family which dominated Europe in the sixteenth century. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_I,_Duke_of_Upper_Lorraine
