ROBERT FitzRichard de Clare, son of RICHARD de Brionne Lord of Clare and Tonbridge [Normandy] & his wife Rohese Giffard (-[1134], bur Priory of St Neot). Guillaume de Jumièges names (in order) "Gilbert, Roger, Gautier et Robert" as sons of Richard, son of "le comte Gilbert fils du comte Godefroi", recording that they made donations to the church of Bec[527]. He is named and his parentage given by Orderic Vitalis, who lists him after his brother Walter[528]. Henry I King of England granted him the fiefdom of Little Dunmow, Essex[529]. A manuscript history of the foundation of Dunmow Priory records the death in 1134 of လRobertus filius Ricardi, primus patronus canonicorum de Dunmaweဝ and his burial လapud Sanctum Neotumဝ, although the dating of events in this source appears shaky[530].
m ([1112]) as her first husband, MAUD de Senlis, daughter of SIMON de Senlis Earl of Huntingdon and Northampton & his wife Matilda [Maud] of Huntingdon (-before 1163). Ingulph's Chronicle of the Abbey of Croyland names "Simon, Waldev and Matilda" as the children of Simon Earl of Huntingdon and his wife Matilda, commenting that they "are still young and in their infancy"[531]. A manuscript narrating the foundation of Daventre priory records that လSymonis de Seynlizဝ had two sisters လquarum unaဦMatildis Seynlizဝ married လRobertus filius Ricardiဝ, but does not name the second sister[532]. A manuscript history of the foundation of Dunmow Priory records the marriage in 1112 of လRobertus filius Ricardiဝ and လMatildam de Sancto Lisioဝ, although the dating of events in this source appears shaky[533]. She married secondly (1136) Saher de Quincy. The primary source which confirms her second marriage has not yet been identified. A manuscript history of the foundation of Dunmow Priory records the death in 1140 of လMatildis de Sancto Licio uxor Roberti filii Ricardiဝ, although the dating of events in this source appears shaky[534].

A manuscript narrating the foundation of Daventre priory names လWalterum et Symoni fratri suoဝ as the two sons of လRobertus filius Ricardiဝ and his wife Matilda[535]. လWalterus filius Robertiဝ donated property to Daventre Priory, for the souls of လRoberti filii Ricardi patris mei et Matildis de Senliz matris meæဦet uxoris meæ Matildis de Lucy et filiorum et filiarum mearumဝ, by undated charter[536]. The Red Book of the Exchequer, listing scutage payments in [1190/91], records "Walterus filius Roberti" paying "xxxi l xv s, lxiii milites et dimidium" in Essex, Hertfordshire[537]. The Red Book of the Exchequer, listing scutage payments in [1194/95], records "Walterus filius Roberti" being granted delay to pay "per brevia" in Essex, Herefordshire[538]. The Rotuli de Dominabus of 1185 records လMatillis de Sainlis que fuit filia Roberti filii Ricardi et mater Willelmi de Albineioဝ and လterra sua in Hungertone et in Winewelleဝ[578]. Robert Fitz Richard (1064-1136), entitled Robert Fitz Richard, Lord of Little Dunmow, Baron of Baynard, was a Norman landowner in England. His estates near Little Dunmow are said[1] to have been given to him after confiscation from Ralph Baynard, who had them earlier[2].
He was steward under Henry I of England[3] and under Stephen of England [4].
Family
He was the son of Sir Richard Fitz Gilbert, Lord of Clare and Tonbridge (c. 1035-1090) and Rohese Giffard, (b. c. 1034), daughter of Sir Walter Giffard, Lord of Longueville,[5] and Agnes Flatel.[6]
He married (c. 1114), Maud de St. Liz, daughter of Sir Simon de St Liz, Earl of Northampton, and Maud de Huntingdon.
Children were:
Sir Walter Fitz Robert, (b. c. 1124).
Maud Fitz Robert, (b. c. 1132), Essex, who married (c. 1146, William d'Aubigny, son of Sir William d'Aubigny, Lord of Belvoir, and Cecily Bigod.

This Robert, who died 1134, married 1112 Maud de St. Liz, Lady of Branham, daughter of Simon St. Liz, 1st Earl of Huntingdon, and by her (who died in 1140 and married 2nd Saire de Quincey) had two sons, Walter, his successor, and Simon, to whom he gave Daventry in Northamptonshire.
