Oswulf
Gender:
Male
Birth:
circa 885
Bamburgh Castle, Northumberlandshire, UK
Death:
circa 965 (72-88)
Northumberland, England, United Kingdom
Immediate Family:
Son of Ealdred I of Bamburgh
Husband of Estrid Svendsdatter
Father of Waltheof I, Earl of Northumbria
Half brother of Maldred Oswult De Aldithley

Osulf I (d. 963) was Earl of Bernicia from 930 and of all Northumbria from 954 until his death. He is known mostly for conspiring with Earl Maccus, son of Olaf Guthfrithson or Olaf Sihtricson, to kill Eric Bloodaxe, King of Jórvík, and his son and brother. After Eric's death, Edred, king of England, gave the once Norse-held lands south of the river Tees to Osulf, who was already in possession of Bernicia north of the Tees.
It seems that Osulf, who was one of Eric's men, betrayed him when he was fighting for his kingdom after the local populace expelled him. Eric was defeated and slain at the Battle of Stainmore, of which little else is known.
He was succeeded by Waltheof, his son.

Osulf (fl. 946·Äî54) was high-reeve of Bamburgh and ruler of Northumbria. Sometimes called "earl", he is more surely the first recorded high-reeve of Bamburgh and the man who, after assisting in the death of its last independent ruler Erik Bloodaxe, administered the York-based Kingdom of Northumbria when it was taken over by the Wessex-based King Eadred of England in 954.
