WILLIAM THE FIRST, styled "Willielmus Rex Anglorum," b.at Falaisein 1025, became Duke of Normandy 1035, and was surnamed The Conqueror, from bis triumph over Harold near Hastings on the 14th Oct. 1066, crowned King of England by Aldred, Archbishop of York, at Westminster Abbey, on the 25th of December in the same year ; m. 1053, Matilda, dau. of Baldwin V., Count of Flanders, fifth in descent from Ethelwida, dau. of Alfred the Great, and 10th in descent from Charlemagne. By her who d.2 Nov. 1083, William the Conqueror had issue,
1 Robert, surnamed Courthose, successor to the Duchy of Normandy, m. Sybilla, dau. of Geoffrey of Conversana, or according to Glover, Roger of Conversaria, and d. in Cardiff Castle, 10 Feb. 1134-5. having had a son William, Count of Flanders, w h o d. s. p. 27 July, 1128, slain at the battle of Aelst, in Flanders.
