VULFARD. The primary source which names Vulgrinus and his brother Vulfard has not so far been identified. Emperor Louis I confirmed the donation of "Vulfarius comes" of property to "cellul√¶ in pago Albiensi...Bella¬â‰ Cella", by charter dated 819[202]. Comte de Flavigny {Flavigny¬â‰ sur¬â‰ Ozerain, C√¥te d'Or}[203]. m ([825/30]) SUSANNA, daughter of BEGO Comte de Paris & his wife Alpais [Carolingian] ([805/10]¬â‰ ). "Vulfardus" donated property to Saint¬â‰ Beno√Æt¬â‰ sur¬â‰ Loire for the souls of "genitoris mei Vulfardi et genetrice mea Susannane necnon et germanorum fratrum meorum Adelardo, Vulgrino, Ymo et sorore mee Hildeburga vel nepote meo Vulgrino" by charter dated 2 Nov 889[204]. The primary source which establishes that Susanna was the daughter of Bego has not yet been identified. Vulfard & his wife had [seven] children:
a)
VULFARD ([830]¬â‰ after 2 Nov 889). [Abb√© de Saint¬â‰ M√©dard de Soissons: Mabillon·Äôs Annales Benedictini record a donation made by ·ÄúRothadus Suessionensis et Pardulus Laudunensis episcopi cum Wlfado abbate sancti Medardi·Äù, dated 858, adding that ·Äúvitios√¶ sunt in apographis tum chronic√¶ not√¶, tum subscripciones·Äù (no citation reference, so the complete original document has not been consulted)[205]. Ferdinand Lot comments that this document provides the only reference to an abbot of Saint¬â‰  M√©dard named Vulfard, but states that it is ·Äúd·Äôune fausset√© criante·Äù (without explaining his reasoning)[206]. However, it is suggested that the existence of this Abbot Vulfard should not be dismissed for the following reasons. A charter of Charles II ·Äúle Chauve·Äù King of the West Franks relating to Soissons Saint¬â‰ M√©dard refers to ·ÄúHildvuinus antiquior abba·Äù[207] (document undated, but Lot states that ·Äúon peut affirmer avoir √©t√© donn√© entre mai 870 et ao√ªt 871·Äù[208]). This ·ÄúHildvuinus·Äù could be identified as Hilduin, also abbot of Saint¬â‰ Denis, who is recorded by Ad√©mar de Chabannes as the brother of Vulgrin Comte d·ÄôAngoulême (brother of this Vulfard, see below,). If that is identification is correct, Hilduin could have been appointed to succeed his brother Vulfard after the latter·Äôs appointment to the archbishopric of Bourges, considering especially the apparent ·Äúquasi¬â‰ inheritance·Äù of abbatial offices in the family of Vulfard Comte de Flavigny.] Archbishop of Bourges 866¬â‰ 868. His parentage is established by the charter dated 2 Nov 889 under which "Vulfardus" donated property to Saint¬â‰ Beno√Æt¬â‰ sur¬â‰ Loire for the souls of "genitoris mei Vulfardi et genetrice mea Susannane necnon et germanorum fratrum meorum Adelardo, Vulgrino, Ymo et sorore mee Hildeburga vel nepote meo Vulgrino"[209].
ADALHARD ([830]¬â‰ after 890). His parentage is established by the charter dated 2 Nov 889 under which "Vulfardus" donated property to Saint¬â‰ Beno√Æt¬â‰ sur¬â‰ Loire for the souls of "genitoris mei Vulfardi et genetrice mea Susannane necnon et germanorum fratrum meorum Adelardo, Vulgrino, Ymo et sorore mee Hildeburga vel nepote meo Vulgrino"[210]. He inherited the villa Sennecey from his maternal uncle comte Eberhard. Comte 875. Comte palatin 877. Comte de Paris [885]. m ¬â‰ ¬â‰ ¬â‰ . The name of Adalhard's wife is not known. Adalhard & his wife had two children:
b)
c)
VULGRIN (¬â‰ 3 May 886, bur Angoulême Saint¬â‰ Cybard). The Chronicle of Ad√©mar de Chabannes records that Charles II "le Chauve" King of the West Franks installed "Vulgrimnum propinquum suum, fratrem Aldoini abbatis" with "Engolisme et Petragorice" after Comte Emenon was killed (in 866), commenting that Vulgrin had been missus in Aquitaine for "Carlo magno imperatore fratre eius" and was already "senex" when appointed to Angoul√™me[215], although this is inconsistent with his parents'
i) ii)
VULFARD ([855]¬â‰ 6 Sep [880/93]). Vulfard is named sororius of King Louis II[211]. The source which confirms his parentage has not yet been identified. He founded the Benedictine abbey of Flavigny. Abb√© de Flavigny 875.
ADELAIS ([855/60]¬â‰ 18 Nov [901], bur Compi√®gne, √©glise abbatiale Saint¬â‰ Corneille). Regino names "Adalheidis" second wife of "Hludowicus rex filius Caroli", stating that he married her after repudiating his first wife[212]. Her paternity is indicated by Vulfard (who would have been the brother of Adelais) being named sororius of King Louis II[213]. Her marriage was not recognised by the church which did not accept her husband's separation from his first wife. The Pope refused to crown Adelais with her husband at Troyes 878, considering that she was not his legitimate wife. Her children were considered illegitimate by the church. m ([875][214]) as his second wife, LOUIS King of Aquitaine, son of CHARLES II "le Chauve" King of the West Franks & his first wife Ermentrudis [d'Orl√©ans] (1 Nov 846¬â‰ Compi√®gne 10 Apr 879, bur Compi√®gne, √©glise coll√©giale Saint¬â‰ Corneille). He succeeded his father in 875 as LOUIS II "le B√®gue King of the West Franks.

marriage date as shown above. Vulgrin's family relationship with the Carolingian kings was through his mother as shown above. His parentage is confirmed by the charter dated 2 Nov 889 under which "Vulfardus" donated property to Saint¬â‰ Beno√Æt¬â‰ sur¬â‰ Loire for the souls of "genitoris mei Vulfardi et genetrice mea Susannane necnon et germanorum fratrum meorum Adelardo, Vulgrino, Ymo et sorore mee Hildeburga vel nepote meo Vulgrino"[216]. The death in 886 of "Vulgrimnus comes" is recorded in the Annales Engolismenses[217].
¬â‰  COMTES d'ANGOUL√äME.
HILDUIN [Audouin] (¬â‰ after 866). Abbot of Saint¬â‰ Denis before 866: the Chronicle of Ad√©mar de Chabannes records that Charles II "le Chauve" King of the West Franks installed "Vulgrimnum propinquum suum, fratrem Aldoini abbatis ex monasterio Sancti Dionisi" with "Engolisme et Petragorice" after Comte Emenon was killed (in 866)[218]. This document is undated, although Lot states that ·Äúon peut affirmer avoir √©t√© donn√© entre mai 870 et ao√ªt 871·Äù[220]. As discussed above under Hilduin·Äôs brother Vulfard, it is possible that ·ÄúHildvuinus·Äù in this document was the same person as Hilduin abbot of Saint¬â‰ Denis.]
