"The first page and a half of these notes were prepared by Robert Barnes, Baltimore, in Nov. 1968. Some other data have been briefed from Arah Miller Fritz and Margaret Milam McProud, 'The Crabtrees of Southwest Virginia,' 1965, and added to the second page." A. William Crabtree, the earliest known ancestor of this family, was born --?--, and died ca. 1756 in Baltimore County, Maryland. His wife;s name was Jane.
[Another source, from within the opus of Mrs. Ann B. Gahan, but not mentioned, states: William and Jane Crabtree lived on Our Creek in Baltimore County, Maryland (now Harford Co.) and there William died Sept 10, 1756, survived by his widow, five sones and three daughters. Jane died between January and July, 1759. M.Welborn, 980513.]
He did not appear in Baltimore County before 1706, as his name does not appear on the tax lists for that county, from 1699 to 1706 (published by Raymond B. Clark, Jr.). The Baltimore County Deed Index shows that in 1728 William Crabtree conveyed 100 acres of "Crabtree's Lot," as a gift, to Grace Hayes, and another parcel of the same lot to Thomas Crabtree. (Balto. Co. Deeds Liber HWS #1A, f. 298, and Liber TB # [smudged - MLW], f. 579).
The will of William Crabtree was made 4 November, 1747, and filed for probate 9 October, 1756 (Balto. Co. Original Wills, Box 9, folder 12 at the Hall of Records).
To his wife Jane he leaves his dwelling plantation with 150 acres of the southernmost end, for her life or widowhood; then to [smudged - MLW] to his son William. Wife Jane was to have one Irish servant named Alexander Anderson. Son Thomas was to have one servant man that "Samuel Webb owes me." Son John was to have 150 acres adjacent where he now lives, being the northeast part; also my negro boy called Duke. John was to pay his brother James 5 pounds current money, and his brother Samuel 5 pounds current money. His wife was to have her thirds, and the sesidue was to go to his 5 sons and three daughters.
The will was witnessed by Thomas Bond, jacob Bond (a Quaker), and Rebecca Puttee. On 3 November, 1756, an inventory of all the goods and chattells of William Crabtree, late of Baltimore County, deceased, was filed by james Billingsley, executor of said Crabtree. Daniel Preston and Thomas Johnson were appraisers. The value of the property was put at [pounds] 62.16.10 1/2. James and Jno. Crabtree signed as kin, and John Crabtree and N. Young signed as
creditors. (Balto. Co. original Inventories, Box 13, folder 54).
In 1758, the account of Crabtree's estate was filed. Legacies were paid to son Thomas, widow jane, John Crabtree for himself and Samuel Crabtree, and to james and William Crabtree. James Billingsley was the executor. (Balto. Co. Original Administrator Accounts, Box 12, folder 5).
The children of William and Jane Crabtree were:
AA. William
AB. Thomas, b. 12 Oct., 1707 - St Johns Par. Reg., p.56
AC. Grace, b. 29 May 1711 - ditto
AD. Anne, b 15 Jan., 1714 - ditto
AE. James, b. 20 Feb 1716 - ditto
AF . John, b. 5 Sept., 1718 - ditto
AG. Elizabeth, b. 13 Dec., 1720 - ditto

"The Crabtree family originated in Yorkshire, England--the name coming from the fact that they lived by the crabtree in the county of York.
The earliest record (from the Crabtrees of Southwest Virginia--no longer in print) was of John Crabtree who lived in Yorkshire around the end of the 14th century;
William Crabtree of Yorkshire, during the same time period;
William Crabtree of the Parish of Snaithe, Yorkshire 1412;
and a bit later, John Crabtree of Halifax, Yorkshire.
All the Crabtree's are thought to have common origin in the Crabtrees of Yorkshire." (Crabtree Tule River Patriarchs, Marilyn Meredith, 1984, Golden West Publishers)

The Crabtree name can, with a high degree of accuracy, be traced back to 14th century England. At about that time the use of surnames became popular. As far as we know, the Family Crabtree started in only place, a village in Yorkshire. It seems that this large family group was centered about one large Crabapple Tree! The first known record of a Crabtree coming to America was in 1622 in Massachusetts. The record of these Crabtrees vanishes until some Crabtrees magically appear in Philadelphia and then move on to Baltimore. (Source: "The Crabtrees of Soutwest Virginia")

William Crabtree I was born March 6, 1682 in Broughton, Yorkshire, England, son of James Crabtree and Elizabeth Webber (or, perhaps, Thomas E. Crabtree and Grace Moore). On May 3, 1703 (age 21) in Broughton, he married Jane E. Halstead (age 15). Jane was born June 6, 1687 in Migby, York County, England, daughter of James E. Halstead and Grace Courtney. Ester _______ William was a farmer who probably lived near Leeds in Yorkshire County, England. He received a grant of several hundred acres in Baltimore County, Maryland, no doubt to encourage him to migrate to America and settle on the lands of Lord Baltimore. William and Jane sailed from England in 1705 with their one year old son, William Jr., and settled in a plantation where Stout Bottle Creek flows into Deer Creek in Baltimore County, Maryland (now Harford County). Deer Creek, in turn, flows into the Susquehanna near Port Deposit. The Crabtrees were members of the Anglican church in Old Joppatowne, Maryland. William increased his land holdings and was even able to purchase the services of an Irish indentured servant named Alexander Anderson. He also had a second servant referred to in his will plus a Negro who may have been indentured or, possibly, a slave. A descendant, Royale Crabtree, visited the site of William's home, however, nothing remained but a small building. Royale also examined the grants held by William from Charles II, King of England. In this neighborhood also lived the Italian family of Poteet, the Pyke and Throckmorton families, and the plantation of the former Count Louis Dumas, called, 'Frenchman's Repose', who had fled from France to Holland. His son, Louis, came to America and was married to Catherine. Their daughter, Catherine, married William's son, James Crabtree. William I died September 10, 1756 (age 74) in Baltimore County, Maryland, and Jane died there on March 17, 1759 (age 71). Moved from Yorkshire around 1705. He was a planter and died on his plantation, situated on the confluence of Deer Creek and Stout Bottle Branch in Baltimore County, MD. William recieved a land grant from Lord Baltimore. He immigrated to Baltimore, MD in 1705. _____________________________________________________________________

[Another
source, from within the opus of Mrs.

(Balto. Co. Deeds Liber HWS # 1A, f. 298, and Liber TB # [smudged - MLW], f. 579).

The Will of William Crabtree was made 4 November, 1747, and filed for probate 9 October, 1756 (Balto. Co. Original Wills, Box 9, folder 12 at the Hall of Records).
To his wife Jane he leaves his dwelling plantation with 150 acres of the southernmost end, for her life or widowhood; then to [smudged - MLW] his son William. His wife was to have her thirds, and the residue was to go to his 5 sons and three daughters.

Young signed as creditors. (Balto. Co. original Inventories, Box 13, folder 54).

The children of William and Jane Crabtree were: AA. William AB. Thomas, b. 12 Oct., 1707 - St Johns Par. Reg., p.56 AC. Grace, b. 29 May 1711 - ditto AD. Anne, b 15 Jan., 1714 - ditto AE. Additional data follows, but I have placed such under the children's individual notes. M.Welborn.

To his wife Jane he leaves his dwelling plantation with 150 acres of the southermost end, for her life or widowhood; then to pass to his son William. Wife Jane was to have one Irish servant named Alexander Anderson.

This is what I have of a transcript of the Crabtree's of MD and OH. The Crabtrees are connected to my DeMoss line. I hope this information might help someone. It was sent to me by a Crabtree researcher. If anyone has a complete copy of the transcript, I would love to have it.

*****************
Our research overlaps in puzzling ways: Several years ago in researching the CRABTREE line, I visited the public library at Portsmouth, Ohio and found a short manuscript called "Family Sketches of the Crabtrees of Southeast Ohio" by Loraine B. Swiger. Ms. Swiger's name was in the visitor's log of the library's genealogy room along with her address which was in the city of Portsmouth. I called on her and we had a long talk. She was in failing health at the time and I'm almost sure she is no longer with us. I wanted to get a copy of her manuscript but she had given the library her last one, so I returned to the library and copied portions of it that dealt with the CRABTREEs I was interested in. Here
are the first three pages of that manuscript with no editing on my part:

Family of William and Jane Crabtree of England and Maryland

William and Jane Crabtree came from England in 1705 bringing with them their son William II aged one year. They came from Leeds, in Yorkshire County, in a sailing vessel. Extensive research has failed to discover any more data. Yorkshire is famous for cattle and farming. William settled on a plantation in Baltimore County, now Harford County, Maryland, at a point where Stout Bottle Creek flows into Deer Creek.

A descendent, Royale Crabtree once visited this spot but nothing remained but a small building. Royale also examined the two land grants held by William from Charles II, King of England. They were evidently given to an ancestor of his for a service performed years ago. In this neighborhood also lived the Italian family of Poteet (various spellings), families of Pykes (Pike) and the plantation of the former Count Louis Dumas who fled from France to Holland. His son Louis came to America. He was married to Catherine. Their daughter Catherine married James Crabtree, son of William Sr. Their sons were Charles and Pierre, who served in the Revolution in America. [Ms. Swiger attaches sources:]

Research by the writer.

The children of William and Jane Crabtree were:
William II born 1704 in England. He married Mary Pyke and removed to Southwest Virginia and died in North Carolina. Married February 17, 1725 in Maryland.

2. Thomas was born in Maryland 1707, October 12. He married Susannah Poteet and they died in Hillsboro, Orange Co., North Carolina in 1774.
3. Grace born May 29, 1711. Married John Hays.
4. Ann born January 15, 1714. Married John Wilburn [This is wrong. She means William Wilburn. MLW 981216]
5. James born February 20, 1716, died 18?? in Oldtown, Maryland.
6. John born September 5, 1718. Married Hannah Butcher.
7. Elizabeth born December 13, 1720. Married James Billingsley.

More later - from Oregon, U.S.A. 8. Samuel born July 25, 1725. All, except James went to Southeast Virginia and other southern states. John and Hannah married April 22, 1755.

Lewis DeMoss had a daughter, Rachel, and sons William, Lewis and John. They lived on the south Potomac River and the South Cacapeon River in Hampshire Co., Virginia. Rachel married Lewis Throckmorton I and they were buried there in 1798. Records destroyed in Civil War.

Their children were Job, William, Lewis II, Thomas,Daniel. Lewis II located in Jackson Co., Ohio. The above families owned acres and acres of land along the South Potomac and South Capaceon Rivers and seemed to have sold most of it about 1796-8. Probably as they planned to go to Ohio by way of Pennsylvania.

James and Catherine (DeMoss) Crabtree were married in Maryland in 1735.
Her parents Louis and Catherine DeMoss owned a large plantation, "Frenchman's Repose", near the Crabtrees,

--- 3 ---

Throckmortons, Pykes, and Poteets. This they sold to follow their daughter and husband to western Virginia, now West Virginia. It is said they resided for a time in Orange County (now Frederick Co.). Louis and Catharine lived and died in Allegheny County Maryland at Oldtown. They owned a mill and they are buried in the cemetery there with only fieldstones to mark their graves. He died in 1784.

Children of James and Catherine were William married Ann Riley and remained in Virginia after 1790. Others were Thomas, Lewis, James who resided in Southwest Virginia as set forth by Mrs. Arah M. Fritz, author of the book, "The Crabtrees of Southwest Virginia". We are indebted to her for much of the foregoing data. Several cousins from that area moved to Ohio near Jackson, Huntington, Waverly as we shall see later.

Children of William and Ann are Peter born Virginia, came to Ohio 1812.
This was furnished to the writer by a grandson of Peter who visited the writer, with his wife and children on the way to visit his wife's relatives in Huntington, West Virginia, also descendents of a Crabtree cousin. Peter married Sarah Willison, daughter of Cornelius Willison, who died in Harrison County, Ohio. Children listed later.

The family of Wm. and Jane Crabtree lived on Deer Creek in Baltimore Co., Md.,now Harford Co. Their births and marriages and deaths are registered in St. Johns Parish Register in Baltimore, Md.

As you can see, reconciling this information with what you have is going to be a major undertaking for both of us. Let me know what areas you want to explore further and I'll help if I can. As I said, I don't have the complete text of the manuscript but I'll share what I have.

Crabtree Family History
Origins
CRABTREE was first used as a surname in the late 14th century in the West Riding of Yorkshire, and the man who assumed it was John de Crabtre, a resident of Sowerbyshire.
There are several other early records, one as far back as 1301, of persons in different parts of England who were described as living near a crabapple tree, but there is no evidence that any of these examples developed into a surname. The descriptions took the form of a first name followed by ·Äòatte·Äô, ·Äòde·Äô, ·Äòat·Äô or ·Äòof·Äô Crabtre.
For three hundred years, there were variations in the spelling of the surname ·Äì Crabtre, Crabbtree, Crabetre, Crabtrie, Crabtry, Crabtrey, Crabtrye and Krabtree have all been found, the most common being Crabtre ·Äì but by the end of the 17th century the variations had virtually disappeared. It is likely that these different spellings can be attributed to the fact that none of the Crabtrees could then read or write, and interpretation of the spelling was left to the local minister or church clerk.
Distribution
During the 1400s and 1500s, the surname was almost entirely restricted to two small areas of the West Riding, one on the west side in the Halifax and Bradford area, and the other on the east side around Snaith. There was also a toehold gained on the north-eastern side of Lancashire, but dispersion to the rest of the country was minimal.
The 1600s saw considerable increase in the number of Crabtree families, including some distribution of them through the middle part of Yorkshire. The growth in numbers in Lancashire was also strong, still mostly limited to the north-eastern corner of the county. There were several appearances in other parts of the country, including London, but the numbers were limited to a handful of families.
The first Crabtree to emigrate to America was Edward in 1635, but there is no record of his survival. At about the same time, John arrived in Boston, Massachusetts, and with his wife Alice started a family line that is still strong in New England today.
The 1700s brought an even faster growth, still mainly concentrated in the counties of Yorkshire and Lancashire. During this century, there were approximately three times as many Crabtree baptisms in Yorkshire as in Lancashire, and three times as many in Lancashire as in the rest of the country combined.
Emigration was sparse in the 1700s. There were a few who sailed to America, the most notable being William and Jane who settled in Maryland about 1705 and gave birth to a family that multiplied and spread to such an extent that many Crabtrees in the United States today can trace their roots to this family. This century saw the arrival of the first Crabtrees in Canada when John and his daughter Sarah settled in Nova Scotia in 1767.
Ireland
There is no evidence that any Crabtree line originated in Ireland and it has to be said that the number of people to be found in Irish records bearing the surname is small.
Nonetheless, the surname has cropped up since as early as 1665 when one Thomas Crabtree, a victualler by trade, served as Keeper of the Public Records in Ireland. This was a standard one-year appointment. At the time, Thomas lived on Fishamble Street in Dublin, close to the docks in the centre of the city.
During the next two centuries, several Crabtrees were stationed for relatively short periods in Ireland as part of their military service, or were working in other occupations. Some were married there and brought up their children. The most common location was Dublin, but there were a few who lived in other parts of the country.
During the 18th century, two family lines of significant historical interest emerged. They relate to John Crabtree who, in 1767, was the first Crabtree to emigrate to Canada, and Hugh Crabtree who was the first Crabtree to arrive in Australia - in the latter's case as a man convicted for his part in the Carlow uprising of 1798 and transported in 1801. Hugh's wife and children were left behind in Ireland. Both of these men were born in Ireland, but it is not yet known where their ancestors originated.
Much work has been done by Nadine Crabtree in researching the family name in Ireland and the results may be found on her website at http://www.crabtreesinireland.com.
DNA
The Crabtree DNA Project welcomes all participants. I encourage you to join.
Participating is an opportunity to uncover information not provided in the paper records, which will help with our family history research. We shall discover which family trees are related, and gain pointers as to where to focus additional research into documented sources. You can see the progress of the project to date by visiting www.familytreedna.com/public/Crabtree.
The y-DNA test tells you about your direct male line, which would be your father, his father, and so on back in time. You must be male to take this test, and you should have the Crabtree surname. Nonetheless, if you believe there is a Crabtree or variant in your direct male line, although you have a different surname, you are also welcome to participate. If you are female, ask a male in your family tree to participate. I encourage males who order a y-DNA test to order 37 markers, if possible. If you order less markers, you can upgrade later, though this costs a little more.
The mt-DNA test provides information for both males and females interested in learning about their direct female line, which would be their mother, their mother·Äôs mother, and so on back in time. For this purpose, you would order an mt-DNA test. For matches in a genealogical time frame, order the mt-DNA Plus test. Further information may be found at www.FamilyTreeDNA.com, the website of the company hosting this project, or you may contact me at the link provided below.
Book
In 2004, I published a book describing the origins, growth and spread of the CRABTREE surname from 1300 to 1800. Entitled CRABTREE Dweller by the Wild Apple Tree, my book examines many available records to trace the towns and hamlets where the early Crabtrees lived, their trades and occupations, their levels of wealth, and the rate and directions in which they spread. I also surmise their lifestyles based on the social pressures over the 500 year period.
The book, which has been updated and reprinted in 2015, contains 360 pages, including eight colour plates. All sources are referenced, and the book is fully indexed. The Foreword has been written by Dr.George Redmonds.

[Another
source, from within the opus of Mrs.

(Balto.

His wife was to have her thirds, and the residue was to go to his 5 sons and three daughters.

Young signed as creditors. (Balto. Co. original Inventories, Box 13, folder 54).

M.Welborn.

Upper hundred north of Gunpowder was a Quaker meeting house used to collect taxes when necessary - a sort of township meeting house then.
