James Butler, 9th Earl of Ormonde and 2nd Earl of Ossory was born before 1515 and died on 28 October 1546. He was the son of Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormonde and Lady Margaret FitzGerald. He was created, in 1535, Viscount Thurles, and was confirmed by Act of Parliament, 6 November 1541, in the Earldom of Ormonde, as 9th Earl with the pre-eminence of the origlnal Earls. He married with Lady Joan FitzGerald, daughter and heiress of 11th Earl of Desmond, and had issue
* Thomas Butler, 10th Earl of Ormonde (b. a 1531-1614), He married, firstly, with Hon. Elizabeth Sheffield, daughter of John Sheffield, 2nd Baron Sheffield, without issue. Married, secondly, Elizabeth Berkeley, daughter of Thomas Berkeley, 6th Lord Berkeley and Anne Savage, had issue. Married, thirdly, Hon. Helena Barry, daughter of David Barry, 5th Viscount Barry, without issue.
* Sir Edmund Butler (d. 1602), married with Hon. Eleanor Eustace, daughter of 2nd Viscount Baltinglass, and had issue.
* John Butler (b. b 1546-1570), married with Katherine MacCartie, daughter of Cormac MacCartie, the MacCartie Reagh and had issue.

Notes: Called "The Lame". Viscount Thurles, E. Ossory. Brought up at the Court of Henry VIII who had a high regard for him and created him Viscount Thurles in the lifetime of his father. The King's policy was to equalise as far as possible the influence of the rival houses of Butler and FitzGerald. For 14 years James was Lord High Treasurer of Ireland, and he was given no less than seven religious establishments on the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Then, 17 Oct 1546 at the age of 42, he went with his servants to be entertained to supper at Ely House in Holborn and he and they were mortally poisoned. His steward and 16 of his servants reportedly died of the same. The confusion caused by his Will gave rise to the founding of the Irish Public Record Office.
