Alexander Younger came to Virginia, settling in York County in the 1680's from Worcester, England. His brother, Andrew, lived in Scotland, where Youngers abounded. Scottish Youngers settled the upper Chesapeake Bay area and along the Rappahannock and above Fredricksburg. One Younger sea Captain had as an apprentice the 12-year old John Paul Jones. We know very little about the origins of Alexander Younger before his arrival in Virginia. There is a parish register entry in Lanark, Glasgow, Scotland showing an Alexander Younger christened on May 2, 1681. We don·Äôt know if that record is for our Alexander, but it could be, especially given the 1699 court record which indicates his age as 18 years of age. DNAeXplained ·Äì Genetic Genealogy

The Question of Identity
Alexander Younger, here treated, was probably born in Scotland. He certainly refers to his brother Andrew in Scotland in his last will and testament.

Letter Addressed to Ellen Younger
Ellen Younger Loretto Hotel Santa Fe 67501 April, 1977
Dearest Ellen,
I promised to write you some family history. I am sorry to have been delayed so long in getting started. Your ggggg grandfather was Alexander Younger who came to Virginia (York County) in the 1680's from Worcester England. At that time there were other Youngers in Worcester and in other places in England. But the Youngers abounded in Scotland, and Alexander's brother Andrew lived in Scotland. Scottish Youngers were prominent in the upper Chesapeake Bay trade and along the Rappahannock River, even above Fredericksburg. As a 12 yr. old boy, John Paul Jones was apprenticed to one of these Younger Scottish sea captains.
Our Alexander made his way up along the Rappahannock from around Williamsbay and Yorktown through King and Queen County in Essex County. Before 1700 he married Rebecca Mills, daughter of John and Sarah Mills of Essex County. Eventually they settled down on a farm at or near the town of Tappahannock, county seat of Essex, located on the Rappahannock where it begins to narrow down but is still pretty wide.
Alexander and Rebecca had 8 children: Thomas (1700), John (1702), Elizabeth (1704), Susannah (1706), Mary (1712), Anne (1715), Jannetta (1717), and James (1725). In 1725 Alexander made his will and died in 1727. I have a copy of his will, no doubt, written by a professional copyist, which reveals dramatically the fancy longhand of that day.
Alexander was a tobacco farmer and seems to have acquired some 300-400 acres of land. I have the impression that they were pious folk. Although everyone in those days was under the jurisdiction of the Anglican Church, I suspect that Alexander was not an Anglican but a member of one of the evangelical denominations. His will reveals him to be charitable. The will indicates that he owned only one slave, perhaps an aging personal servant. So Alexander was a yeoman farmer whom Thomas Jefferson, many years later, would call "the chosen people of God."
After a year or two Rebecca married Timothy Driscoll, and they left most of their property to Anne Younger, who married John Price of Middlesex County, VA.

What follows is the last item from my visit to the Danville, Virginia library, to the Piedmont Genealogical society which serves Halifax, Mecklenburg, Pittsylvania counties in Virginia and Caswell Co NC.

I have previously posted the rest of the items I found there.

This item is called People and Places Here and There and it was written in 1981 by Mrs. Cora Taylor Younger Smith. It was in a vertical file in the library. One of the section is about this ladys Younger heritage.

Youngers of Virginia (Mattie Ellen Trube)

I looked for the earliest Younger family in English-American records and I found in Worcester, England. In 1618 William Younger, Ancient Clerk, and in 1622 John Younger also in Worcester. A William Younger was listed in a Parish Register in 1674. In London in 1688 a Mark Younger witnessed a will.

In James City County and York County, Alexander Younger was on a jury in 1680 and owned property in 1691. About 1706 he had a residence in Rappahannock, Essex County, and was in /County Records often until his death. In 1727 (Will bk 4, pages 222,223). Also in 1706 Joseph Younger was very active as a merchant mariner between Whitehaven, England and Essex Co, Va. He is recorded as having an order for a chariot for a horse for Willaim Fauntleroy of Rappahannock Co. in 1741. That merchant company was continued until 1774 by John Younger of Caroline Co who had connections in many towns along the Rappahannock. Alexander Younger mentioned a brother in Scotland and there was a William Younger who drowned enroute to America in 1679.

Alexander Younger married before 1700 Rebecca Mills, daughter of John and Sarah Mills of Essex County, which was verified by the will of John Mills in 1719. His sons, Thomas, John and James have descendents from NY to the South and from Virginia to Arkansas, Missouri and Texas. Thomas and his 15 children stayed in Virginia (Essex, Halifas and Pittsylvania): John settled in Maryland from Caroline Co, Va and descendents went to Missouri and California. James went to Spottsylvania County with his wife's parents, John Nash and Ann Brewer of Middlesex County. His son Thomas married Mary Nall, daughter of John Nall of Spotsylvania Co and went from NC to Tennessee and his childen settled in Arkansas and Texas. These facts were verified in Co records, census records, Bible records and wills. A trip to Tappahannock in November verified much of this data.

There are so many unidentified Youngers after 1800 in Halifax County, Kentucky, Arkansas, Illinois and Missouri that cannot be determined until the present generation becomes interested enough to go back 100 years. There are so many Johns, Thomases, Alexanders and James (a few Williams) that identity is not certain. But one thing is certain - their descent from the XVII Century William, Alexander, John, Mark, Thomas and James of England is evident in each family.

I have been able with the help ofthe lady above to get a complete verified chart of the Younger family back to 1680 - and Egnland. Also the Coat of Arms.

Records found in Virginia Counties. Essex, Caroline, Rappahannock, Middlesex, Cumberland, Spottsylvania, Pittsylvania, Halifax, Your and James City; North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, Missouri and Texas. (From the Virginia Settler and Adventurers, Family and Bible records and letters).

The Younger Family

The Younger family was prominent in Pittsylvania-Halifax counties, Virginia in the early 19th century. John Marcus Younger married Mary Carter. According to the dates, I assume he was the son of John Younger, who owned more than 100 acresin this county in the 1830s.

In a recent book, ·ÄúPittsylvania Homes and People of the Past,·Äù is pictured the handsome home of John Younger, with a half-page history of his family. This home has been open for House and Garden Tours in recent years. The present owner appreciates its value and keeps the house and grounds in good condition.

Sketches of the Virginia Conference - Lefferty - 1890 Rev. Robert H. Younger

He is a native of Pittsylvania County. The head of the family was Marcus Yonger, of the Peninsula, and soldier of the Revolution. The parents of our preacher are devout members of the Methodist Church. A pious mother taught her sons the ways of the Lord. In 1869, at a noted revival at Zion's chapel, on the Bannister Circuit, he professed religion. Soon God called him to the ministry but he hestiated before its magnitude and responsibility until August 1873, when he was licenses to preach. He entered Tandolph-Macon college in Sept of the same year and remained until June 1876. He represented hsi society in the public debate. In Nov 1876 he was admitted on trial into the conference and sent to East Franklin Circuit. In 1879 he was assigned to Middle Bedford, then to Franklin, East Franklin, West Charlotte, North Micklenburg - his present charge. It is conceded that with the sterling elements which equip for a career of enduring value ot he Church, Mr. Younger is specially endowed. He has force of character and seldom fails to "compass the doing" of whatever his hands find to do. He has opinions and without hesitation expresses them. The fear of man is not before his eyes. He is decisive in manner, prompt in executing and agressive in Christ's cause. There is alertness, emergy and discretion in his conduct of affairs. He does no build on another mans foundation. He enterprises his own campaigns and wins his own victories. Wherever he finds a field he begins to turn the furrows, seed the soil, an dpresently a harvest waves a golden welcome to his scythe. The gift of speech discerned at college has been stirred up within him. His pulpis are nto without engaging words of heavenly wisdom. He has a ready vocabulary of apt sentences. His manner and utterance pleas ethe eye and ear, persuading th eheart. The membership is build up by increasing converts, the edifices of worship ar adorned by the willing hands of the brethren brought to enthusiasm by his zeal an eloquence. Mr. Younger has been married twice, beign fortunatel and led of the Lord in each selection. The writer had the pleasure of an acquaintance with the present accomplished helpmeet of Mr. Younger.-

This is followed by a photo fo the Mustain-Younger-Andrews House, Rt. 686, 5 mi east of Gretna. This lovely colonial home has been owned by Lea Andrews for 35 years. It is believed to have been built on a 1752 land grant to the Mustains and after changing owners many times, was sold to John Younger in 1832. This was the home of Samuel W. Younger, his son, until his death. It then passed to his son William W. Younger, who sold it around 1900.

The beautifully carved cornice is the date of 1788. The broad brick chimneys were laid in Flemish bond and the exterior was of beaded clapboard until recent years when it was covered with aluminum siding. The small colonial portico was replaced witha large porch years ago.

Over the front entrance is an ornate fan shaped window of blown glass with intricate woodcarving surrounding it. This is repeated over the upstairs hall window. In the parlor the wainscoting is on one piece of pine 24 inches wide and 1.5 inches thick. A Cross and Bible door from this house was donated by the Andrews family to the resotration of the early clerk's office of the county.

Alexander Younger came to Virginia, settling in York County in the 1680's
from Worcester, England. His brother, Andrew, lived in Scotland, where
Youngers abounded. Scottish Youngers settled the upper Chesapeake Bay
area and along the Rappahannock and above Fredricksburg. One Younger sea
Captain had as an apprentice the 12-year old John Paul Jones.
Alexander migrated from along the Rappahannock around Williamsburg and
Yorktown into Essex County, Virginia. Sometime before 1700, he married
Rebecca Mills, daughter of John and Sarah Mills of that county and
settled on a farm near Rappahannock, where he was a tobacco farmer. (From
'Youngers, 1680s to 1980s by Helen McMindes published in 'Boone County
Historian' Vol. XII No. 1 - 1989).
The earliest record found on Alexander Younger was in Somerset Co.,
Maryland, dated June 7, 1675, 'Alexander Younger of this county proved
his rights to 100 acres of land for transporting himself and James
Morrice, his servant, into this province to inhabit.' This was recorded
in the book, 'The Early Settlers of Maryland,' by G. Spardas. Assuming
Alexander was at least 21 at this time, this would place his birth circa
1659. The next information on the Younger name was found in the
'Maryland Calendar of Wills, ' Vo. 1, Pg. 173. Alexander Younger was
testator of the will of John Parrimore of Pocketty Norton, 6 Feb. 1675.
In 'The Flowering of the Maryland Palatinate,' by H. W. Newmand,
Alexander Younger is named as 'the overseer of the manorial holdings of
George Beckwith, known as St. Joseph Manor on the Patuxent in 1676.'
In the introduction to 'Archives of Maryland' there is a resume of a case
of Mrs. Sarah (Cole) Claw Younger petitioning for relief against her
husband, Alexander Younger, concerning some land left to her by William
Claw, deceased, her late husband. The records in this case found in the
'Archives of Maryland' Vols. LXVI and LXVII, dated 1677. The last
sentence in the account states, 'the rascally husband (Younger) had
departed the province months before.'
There is no proof this is the Alexander who married Rebecca Mills, but
many Younger researchers believe it is. The Mills family was in Maryland
at this time, so he could have followed them to Virginia and married
young Rebecca there. Rebecca's father left his will in Essex Co., VA
records for 1717-1722. They were copied and put in a book by J. F.
Dorman in 1959. On pages 95-97 is the will of John Mills of St. Ann.
(Copied from material sent to me by Dreat Younger in 1997. I believe it
is from 'The Thomas Lacy III Family' US/CAN, 929.273, L119LL located at
Mormon Temple of Records in SLC, UT. Copy made 1991).
Records show that in 1715, Alexander purchased 220 acres of land in South
Farnham Parish, Essex Co., (VA Colonial Abstracts #9, pp. 319-320; Essex
Co. VA Wills and Deeds Bk 14, p. 359). However, since his wife was from
Essex Co. and since some of his children had reached their majority when
he prepared his will in 1725, he must have been a resident of the county
considerably earlier than 1715. His will, dated 11 August 1725 and
proved 18 July 1727, named his wife, Rebecca, and eight children -
Thomas, John, Elizabeth, Susannah, Mary, Anne, Janette, and James (Will
Bk 4, pp 222-223). From court records it is known that in 1732, James,
Susannah, Mary, Anne, and Janette were still minors because Thomas was
named their guardian (Will Bk 5, pp 115, 116 and 119). (Copied from
information sent me by Linvil G. Rich in 1997).
NOTE: As can be seen from the above accounts, there is much confusion as
far as which Alexander is being referred to. He could not have been born
in 1681 and also migrate here in the late 1680s, nor prove his rights to
land in 1675. Thus far, using the Scottish Church Records CD at the LDS
Church, I have found Alexander born circa 1608; Alexander born Sept 26,
1647; Alexander born Nov 6, 1664; and Alexander born May 2, 1681 -- all
in Glasgow, Scotland.

I've got some history from the 1989 copy of the "Boone County Historian".
Alexander Younger came to VA, settling in York County in the 1680's from
Worcester, England. His bro. Andrew lived in Scotland, where Youngers
abounded. Scottish Youngers settled the upper Chesapeake Bay area and
along the Rappahannoch and above Fredricksburg. One Younger, sea
Captain, had as an apprentice the 12 year old, John Paul Jones.

Alexander migrated to Essex County, VA, around Williamsburg and Yorktown.
Sometime before 1700, he married Rebecca Mills, daughter of John and
Sarah Mills of that same county and settled on a farm near Tappahannock,
where he was a tobacco farmer.

Eight children were born to them:
Thomas(1700),
John(1702),
Elizabeth(1704),
Susannah(1706),
Mary(1712),
Anne(1715),
Jannetta(1717),
and James(1720).

Alexander made his will in 1725 and died in 1727.

My information continues on from the youngest, James. He had a son named
Thomas who had a son named Thomas.

My personal lineage seems to go on from there down to my great-great
grandfather Jasper Newton Younger whose daughter, Cara Dulcena Younger
Manes is my great grandmother. Her son Ruel Manes is my grandfather. My
mother is Carnoma Jill Manes (maiden name). Although, it looks like
there might be a discrepancy regarding a Humphrey Younger b 1677 - d
1739, that looks like he could have been a brother to the Thomas that
beget Alexander. Sometimes the way these "tree" graphs are written, I
get a little confused.

If you would like more of the information that I have, E-mail me and I'll
send it to you. I'm still trying to decipher it.
