According to the book, Margaret was born 18 Jan 1856 (I suspect in TN, because her father, David Houser, moved to Johnson county circa 1870's.)
The 1900 Arkansas fed census has them living in Montgomery county, the Leverney (?) township; and my grandfather was born in Story in Nov 1909.¬â€  His father, Edgar Smith (a son of Joseph and Margaret) must have been living in Montgomery county at the time as well.

Dear Marvin,
I have looked at the History book¬â€  and I couldn't find anything directly towards your Joseph P Smith. I do have a copy of the 1900 census and will check the 1910 , 1920 for you if you would like.
I also checked the 1880, 1870, and found a lot of Smiths, but none that fit your Joseph.¬â€  I can tell you that they were married in Ark because their oldest son is living next door to them in 1900. His name is William and I am assuming you already know that.
As for looking for records, I can testify to the quality of MOnt. Co's records. All thier records are in excellent shape and none to my knowledge have been lost.
I would suggest if you make a trip there to let me know. I used to live in the area and can give you a range of places to stay at modest places.
That is only a suggestion. You are in for a delightful trip, I think , because Ark is one of the most beautiful states we have.
Also, I would like to suggest that you contact Debby Baldwin. She runs the historical societ of sorts. They have a small library there that has most of the stuff on microfilm, but since the courthouse is just one block from the library, you could prawl to your heart's content in it.
I will look thru my stuff once more to see if I can find anymore leads for you.
ttyl,
Susan
