James's sister, Barbara, and her husband, David Frazier, sold their part of her father's land to James October 5, 1773. James Ennis enlisted in February, 1776, in the 9th Virginia Regiment of Foot, which was also known as the 9th Virginia Battalion of Foot in Service of the United States and the 9th Virginia Regiment on Continental Establishment. He was under the command of Colonels Thomas Snead and George Matthews at various times. One James Innis (sic) was promoted from private 9th Virginia Regiment to Lieutenant-Colonel 15th Virginia Regiment November 13, 1776. According to family history, he was captured at the Battle of Germantown, Pennsylvania, October 4, 1777.

James Ennis 1735-78 Bio.

In 1738 James Ennis·Äô father, Sir John Ennis, came to America when he was forced to flee Ireland because he had killed an officer of the law. James, at the age of 3, traveled with his father as a stowaway. They settled in Augusta County, Virginia USA. James enlisted in the 9th Virginia Regiment of the American Revolutionary Army in February 1776. He was captured at the Battle of Germantown in 1777. He died as a British prisoner of war in the winter of 1778. He had eight children.

James went as a young boy of three to America with his father Sir John Ennis.¬â€  Family tradition states that James fought in the Revolutionary War. He probably bought land on the Catawba River in Burke County, North Carolina and moved there with his family in early 1780.¬â€ ¬â€  The following comes from "Affidavit of Willis Lyons Ennis dated 17 April 1937".¬â€  [James Ennis was the one and only child and heir to all the Towns and Lands of Augha, Cashel, Momrach, Bananarow, Caldragh, Tullaghmore, Kmckullen, Gortnarne, Agapoloo, and Killacross, all situated in the Baron of Leitrim, and the County of Leitrim, Ireland].
