I'm adding this John Lee, Esq. or Sr., so we can connect the line of Capt. Thomas Lee. I think its been well proven that this is true. In The book The Lee's of Johnston County, Or it may have a different name, i'm not sure, any way, by Dr. Luby F. Royall, Jr., and his communications with Will F. Frank and other people. John Lee Sr. Built his house in c.1742, and left it in his will to go to Capt. Thomas Lee when his wife Mary, "probably" Bryan, pastaway because of the close association with the Bryan's and the name Needham. Needham Bryan was the son of William and Alice (Macland) Bryan. She died in c.1792 or 1794. Then Thomas sold some of the property and gave house and some property to his nephew, Lemuel Lee son of John Lee JR. John Lee JR.and Capt Thomas Lee moved to Hawkins co. then Green Co. Tenn. in c. 1783. There is a lot more, but I won't add it now.

Note: of Washington County, Virginia---from LEENET, query answered by Gary Lee, (dated Dec. 4, 2005) as follows; "We know from the G.W. Lee letter that there are four Lee brothers; Peter, John, Richard Henry, & Evan in Buckingham County, Virginia in the 1750`s. DNA samples from a descendant of John Lee, & Jesse Lee (grandson of Peter Lee--my note) matched perfectly. Thus, at a minimum, Jesse Lee, & the Lee brothers, of Buckingham County, Virginia, in the 1750`s, have a common ancestor."
***NOTE: Above query - Gary Lee of the Lee DNA Project formally LEENET on Rootsweb confirms that DNA proven match for Peter Lee, John Lee (John Lee, Esq), Richard Henry Lee and Evan Lee as sons of Richard Henry Lee and Mary Young - JCF***
GEORGE WASHINGTON LEE LETTER (Son of Abner Lee)
The letter appeared in the Oct.-Dec. 1996 issue of the Virginia Genealogist Magazine. The original is owned by Isabell Cameron of Berry Creek, California .
Letter written to Abner Gresham Lee by his father, George Washington Lee: October 9th, 1867 Feather River, Sutter County, Cal.
A.G. Lee. I will now write you a few lines to let you know that I am still alive and in tolerble health and dohope this may find you alive and in good health. I have your letter of last March the 7th, 67, before me which is the last leter I have had from you, and the last one that I have seen or heard of from you was theleter you wrote to E. W. after you had heard that Rachel was dead, and as you speak of Scalp takin it maybee that your Scalp has left the head; but I hope not. Well your leter that youbefore the one on the 7th ofMarch got lost so I could not find it and, I waited to see if I would find it but have not found it yet. In it you wanted to know something about your mother which I have entirely forgoten but E. W. says that you wantedto know how old she was when she died. Well she was Borne May 12th 1802 and died June 4th, 1852. You wanted to know if your uncle Levi had any son named Alfred. Now I can say to you that he has not. He has ason named Andrew but I have forgot his middle name though it appears to me it was Lawrence or Baley. I had a Cozen in Tennesse named Alfred but whether he had any middle name or not I don't know and he married one of my Cozens daughters on my mother's side by the name of Gailbreath and there was one of his brothers by the name of Abraham Lee and I think his wife was a Piron. Alfred and Abraham was sons of uncle Jehew Lee by Richard Henry Lee's second wife whose maiden name was Miller. Alfred and Abram are onley 1/2 cozens to me. They were Brothers to Isaac Lee of Mud Praire, Ill.and uncles to Peter T. Lee also of Mud Prairie, Ill. Now if aney one of them had a son cauled Alfred I don't know it. Well there must bee maney thousands of us as my grate grandfather was certainly the firstLee that ever was in North America with his familey. He was one of the setlers of Jamestown, Va. I haveforgotten great-grandmother's maiden name. She was Welch and born and raised in the City of Wales. The(y) had 4 sons and how maney daughters I do not now remember but I remember seeing of two.Old Aunt Rhodey Watkins and Aunt Judey. The 4 sons was named John, Peter, Evens and Richard Henrey who is my Grandfather. Well Richard Henry Lee married Mary Grisham who was the sister of thetwo John Grishams Brothers, full Welch also, and he had by her 7 sons and 3 daughters (to wit) Grisham,William, Jesse, Archer, Young, George and Abner.
had by her 7 sons and 3 daughters (to wit) Grisham,William, Jesse, Archer, Young, George and Abner. These was the sons. The daughters was named Dorothy, commonaly cauled Dolley, Mary & Elizabeth. Well I never saw uncle Grisham nor none of his family. He married Priciley Staples and staid in Virginia and was a gunsmith to the U. S. in time of the Revolution. Was then quite an old man and had children as old as my father so his family must have spredto many hundreds by this time. Uncle William also maried a Staples and mooved to Kentucky in an earlyday. Him and his family I have saw excep one son and two daughters. He had 5 sons and 4 or 5 daughters. Uncle Jessee maried but I have forgoten his wife's name. he went to Geogia, Oglethorp County, had a large family but I never saw him or aney of his children. Uncle Archer died in the Arme of the Revolution. Uncle Young maried a Mathewes and had children how maney I do not Know. I never sawhim. he staid in Virginia. I saw one of his sons, Guy Lee. Uncle George maried and moved to Kentucky . Who he married I do not know. I never saw him or any of his children. They lived on the National Road between Vandalia and the Urebar River in Ill. Your grandfather you know all about. Now Aunt Dolley married a Thorton. The(y) lived in tennesse though I never aney of them. Aunt Mary maried her cousin Thomas Lee son of G.uncle Peter Lee and had many children. I never saw aney but her grandson William Lee, Willis Reeves brother-in-law which you have saw. Aunt Elizabeth maried her cousin, also son of G.U. Peter, Richard Henrey Lee. the(y) both moved to Kentucky in an earley day andthen to Mo. She was Elizabeth Holley's grandmother & Dr. Wright's Grand mother. She was the youngest;and grandmother died and grandfather maried a Mary Miller and had by her 5 sons and 1 daughter (to wit)Richard, Barnet, Miller, Gehew & Stepen. Uncle Richard maried a Mary Devenport, had 5 or 6 boys and as maney girls. I have saw them amaney a time. Uncle Barnet maried Mary Dewroset & had one son and5 or6 daughters. I have saw them all often. Uncle Miller I have saw but it was when I was little. Who he maried I do not know. It likely that Stephen D. Lee of the confederate armey was one of his sons as he move to Alabama in an early day. I hope the President will have enough in Congress to sustain his vetos this winter. Well you will get a letter I wrote to Robert Cheshire. I had no envelop and sent it to town by George & Cam. George knew who it was to, put it in envelop, gave to Cam to Direct and he Directed it to you instead of to R. C.

John Lee is the father of Capt. Thomas Lee of Lee Valley, Tennessee. Capt. Thomas Lee is not the missing heir of Richard Lee II of Ditchley. A family bible turned up in Alabama in 1930, which was used to claim descendancy from Richard of Ditchley, through Capt. Thomas Lee. In 1952, a closer examination of the bible showed that entries had been made later than the apparent age of the bible. After this discovery, documentary proof (see below) was found in the North Carolina Court Records of 1768, that the Thomas Lee mentioned in the bible was actually the son of John Lee of North Carolina. No relationship has been proven between John Lee and the Lees of Ditchley.
John Lee's early life is still a mystery. It is believed that he was born c.1690-1695 in Virginia, possibly Northumberland Co. He married and settled along the VA/NC border around 1720, in Nansemond Co. On 26 July 1743 he received a land grant of 500 acres on the south side of the Neuse River in Johnson Co., NC, and moved there with his family. He bought more land and at the time of his death in 1768 he willed a total of 1770 acres to his heirs. He left a will (see text below) dated December 4, 1766 which named his wife Mary Lee and children. The will was probated in February 1768, so the date of death is between those two years. Johnston Co NC was Craven Co NC when John moved there in the early 1740's. It is believed but not proven that his wife's maiden name was Bryan.

Update June 2017:
geni member Keith Corbett writes:
"The Lee DNA project has shown John was closely related to but probably not a descendant of, Thomas Lee who d.1645 on a voyage to Ct. His wife Phoebe Browne was the sister of William Lee's (of N.Y.) mother in-law. William was Lee Magna and likely a close relative of Thomas, He and his wife Mary Marvin had a son John b.1684 who fought in the French Indian war and supposedly died shortly after returning but DNA suggests he went instead to Va., married Mary Bryan and settled in N.C., dying in 1766. William Lee is my ancestor, if John is yours we are related, nice to meet you. I suggest you consult the Lee project available on the internet and provisionally change John's parents to William and Mary. For a pedigree of Lee Magna see Stirnet Lee09. "

Biography
John LEE married Mary W. BRYAN in 1725 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. John LEE Esq. lived in Virginia in 1695, when tobacco was grown in fields in the state and plantation owners reaped the results. They had six children in 17 years. John LEE Esq. was in North Carolina when farmers joined forces in a fight that would foreshadow the American Revolution. He died on December 4, 1766, in Johnston County, North Carolina, at the age of 72.
John Lee was born on March 11 1690 in VA. He married Mary Bryan in 1725 in Nottoway, Isle of Wight, VA. He died on Dec 4 1766 in Mill Creek, Johnston, NC.
John LEE , Esquire Birth: BET 1690 AND 1700 in Nancemond Co., Virginia 1 Death: ABT FEB 1768 in ,Johnston, NC
Occupation: Esquire
Note: John Lee came to Johnston Co., North Carolina, then Craven County during the early 1740's.
It is estimated that John Lee was born between 1690 and 1700 and died between Dec 4, 1766 and Geb 1768. On the earlier stated possible death date, John's will was written & witnessed by Richard C. Lee, Gilbird Hix and Samuel Smith Jr. John Esq Lee's will was executed by his two sons; Edward and John Lee.
John Esq. Lee married Mary (possibly Bryan) who was born CA 1705. Many believe Mary was the sister of Needham Bryan. Needham's parents are known to be William and Alice "Macland" Bryan, and it is known they were the parents of a William, John, Mary and Alice Bryan also. It is possible that all of John Lee's children were born in Virginia before he migrated to the area of Craven Co., North Carolina which would later become a portion of Johnston County.

It is believed that most of John and Mary Lee's children were living at the time of his death and that they are named in John's will in the order of their birth.
1Robert Lee
2Edward Lee
3John Lee
4Thomas Lee
5Fredrick Lee
6Elizabeth who married William Ingram
7daughter Rachel who married John Powell
8Mary Lee
9Sabray Lee who married John Green

His will also names his wife as Mary. The date for settlement of Mary's estate has not been documented. However, in 1792, Thomas Lee was in the county to sell the home place.
The home place had been willed by John to his son, Thomas, upon the date of his wife Mary's death. At this time, Thomas Lee resided in Hawkins, Co., Tenn. and had lived there for appr. 20 years since about 1773. Thomas Lee and brother John had moved to Hawkins Co., Tenn around the same time. Both of these Lee brothers had large families before they died in Hawkins Co. Tenn.

Johnston County, NC Wills, 1760-1830; Volume #2, Page #95, Johnston County Wills and Records at Raleigh, NC, State Dept of Archives and History reads as follows:

John Lee's X Mark
Johnston County, NC records indicate that John Lee served on juries and helped "lay off' roads but the best records on him are the land transactions.
It is evident, there is not a complete record of his land holdings, or that he willed too much land. Land records indicate John Lee owned 1470 acres; while he willed an estimated 1779.
John Lee Esq. was living in Nanssemand County, Virginia during 1728, when Coilonel Richard Byrd ran the line between Virginia and North Carolina. This line split John's plantation so that part of it was in North Carolina and part in Virginia. The same was true of lands owned by Godfrey Lee and Dr. Richard Lee; both whom resided near John Lee Esq.
John had owned several hundred acres in Nansemond Co., Virginia but after 1728, the majority of his land became part of North Carolina. John Lee Kept this land until around 1740, when he sold it and moved to Craven Co., NC which later (in 1746) became Johnston Co.
John Lee had received land grants in Craven Co., NC on Jul 26,1743 and never sold them; but deeded them to his children by deed or will. When this land was passed on to John's children, this land was on Mill Creek in Johnston Co.
John had remained on this land until his death in 1768. the old graveyard where John was probably buried had only fieldstone markers, and has long since been plowed under.
