Notities over Johannes (Jacob) Houser Sr.

Weaver and tailor. He acquired land (1200 to 1400 acres), and upon his
death, the land conveyed to his two eldest sons, John (Jr.) and Peter.

Per Elmer A. Houser, John Houser "was born about 1709, probably in
Germantown, Pennsylvania, although it is possible that he was born in
England or even at sea while his parents were in route to America,
because he was born about the time they made the journey from England to
America."

John (Johannes) Hauser was born about 1709, probably in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is possible that he was born in England or even at sea while his parents were en route to America, because he was born about the time they made the journey from England to America. He grew up in Conestoga in Lancaster Co. Pennsylvania and followed his father's trade as a weaver. To satisfy a regulation of William Penn, founder of the colony of Pennsylvania, Karl Hans Von Hauser's sons, Ulrich and Johannes Hauser Anglicized their names to Woolrich and John Hauser. In 1744, John moved to adjoining York County, Pennsylvania and, shortly thereafter, he married Mary Elizabeth George (1720-1780).
John and Mary had seven children and settled in North Codorus Township. His family was active in St. Paul's Lutheran, known as Ziegler's Church in honor of its founder. John was not only a successful weaver and tailor but acquired considerable acreage of land for farming. Various estimates are that he owned some 12-1400 acres of land when he died in 1763, at age 54. He left a widow and seven, largely adolescent children. John's will divided his land between his two eldest sons, John (Jr.) (about 17 years old) and Peter (about 12). Mary raised her children with the help of her husband's brother, Jacob who lived nearby.

Robert Carpenter ((XXXXX@XXXX.XXX)) [22-VII-2007]: 'I do not know the parents of Peter, Henry or John Houser who moved to NC after the Revolution. John Howser was listed as from York County, PA, which is my only clue. Henry Houser lived in York County, SC and built a stone house which still stands adjacent to the Kings Mountain Battleground site Henry owned land in Lincoln County, NC also.

I have seen on the Brethren list that Housers were Brethren but my only association with them in NC was as Lutherans.';
