In March of 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. and received his Wingers and Officer status in 1944. Bus was a B29 Pilot, serving in the Pacific Theatre of Operations during WWII until receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1946.
Upon returning from his service, Burl and his brother, LeRoy formed Place Brothers. In 1955 he incorporated Mining Co. 1955 and P&M Stone Co. Inc.
In 1957 he moved to Humboldt where he served on many boards for professional, church and local organizations at a local, state and national level. Burl enjoyed spending time with family at the lake, golfing and hunting as well as spending time at his homes in Okoboji, and Mesa, Ariz. One memorable honor he had was being chosen C.Y.O. Citizen of the Year.
