Lady Mary Feilding, 3rd Marchioness of Hamilton's portrait by Van Dyck must have been painted in London in the mid-1630s and has been in the Hamilton Collection ever since.
It shows the marchioness full-length, in an elegant satin dress with a low, square neckline edged with fine lace. Her full sleeves are trimmed at the cuffs with matching lace and her skirt flows in natural lines from her basqued bodice. She has pearls in her hair, pearl earrings, a long string of pearls edging her neckline and pearl bracelets.
The eldest daughter of William, 1st Earl of Denbigh, Mary was married in 1622 to the 1st Duke of Hamilton, at that time Earl of Arran. She was nine and he was 14. After giving birth to six children in as many years, Mary fell ill with a lingering fever and died in 1638.
