Western Adventurers of Dorchester, Eng. He spent the follo wing summer and
winter at Cape Ann, having 13 men under him. He was succee ded at the close of
the year by ROGER CONANT, who also held office only one yea r, when the
undertaking was abandoned. He settled at Salem to which Co nant and others had
removed in 1626; appears in the earliest records extant a s proprietor. Juryman
27 (7) 1636; freeman May 17, 1637; town officer; deputy t o Gen. Court. He
deeded land 6 Dec. 1671, acknowledged 13 (1) 1672-3. Firs t wife's name
unknown, (unless she be the Margaret, mentioned above wit h Edmund. (?)) He m.
after 15 (3) 1642, Damaris, widow of _______ Shattuck, wh o was prominent among
the Quakers of the town. She d. 28 (9) 1674. Children: T homas, George (a
father in 1644), Richard, Samuel (b. about 1627, per depos. ), Joseph, John,
Sarah (m. _____ Balch), Seeth b. 25 (10) 1636, (m. _____ Gr afton), Miriam (m.
John Hill). Joseph Pope calls George, Richard and Joseph " brothers".
"He d. 29 (10) 1674. Will dated Dec. 7, 1668, probate d March 29, 1675, beq.
to wife, whom he calls the "mother-in-law" (step-mother) o f his son Thomas; to
sons Thomas, Thomas of Salem, Woburn, prop. 1648. He Georg e, Richard, Samuel,
Joseph and John; to daus. Sarah Balch, Seeth Grafton and Mi riam Hill, with the
two daus. of the latter, namely Miriam and Susanna (see th e Planter's Plea, by
