LifeSketch: Dr. John Woodson was born in 1586 in Devonshire England. He matriculated from St. John's College on March 1,1604 at the age of eighteen. Dr. Woodson was killed 18 April 1844 at the beginning of the Third Anglo-Powhatan War (1644-1646). Dr. Woodson married Sara Winston on 19 October 1615 in Devonshire, England. Dr Woodson contracted as surgeon for a company of British Troops that were provided for the defense of the emigrants in what was then known as South Virginia at the request of the newly appointed Governor, Sir George Yeardley. Gov. Yeardly, Dr. Woodson sailed from Blackwall, England accompanied by their wives and the company of soldiers sailed from Blackwell, England on the ship "George" arriving in Jamestown, Virginia on 16 Apri1 1619. Governor Yeardly and his wife, Tempernce, became very good friends and resided in the fortifiction known then as Flowerdew Hundred Plantation. Flowerdew Hundred Plantation dates to 1619 with the patent by Sir George Yeardley of 1,000 acres on the south side of the James River about 30 miles north of Jamestown, VA. Yeardley probably named the plantation after his wife's wealthy father, Anthony Flowerdew, just as he named another plantation "Stanley Hundred" after his wife's wealthy mother, Martha Stanley. Gov. Yeardley's wife, Temperance Flowerdew, came from English gentry in the County of Norfolk. A "hundred" was historically a division of a shire or county. In 1624, Abraham Piersey, Cape Merchant of the Virginia Company, purchased Flowerdew Hundred renaming it Piersey's Hundred. Over the years, Flowerdew Hundred has been known as Fleur de Hundred, Flowerdieu, Flower de Hundred, Flourdy Hundred, Piersey or Peircey’s Hundred, Selden, Hood, and Bellevue. The children of John and Sara were probably born at Flowerdew Hundred. The children of Dr John Woodson and Sara Winston were John "Tub" Woodson b. 1632, Robert "Potato Hole" Woodson Sr. (1634–1707) and Deborah Woodson (1636-?). These boys were known as "Tub" and "Potato Hole" because when the Indians raided their home, Sara hid John under a washtub and Robert got into the hole were potatoes were stored. During the raid of 18 April 1844,, Dr. John Woodson was killed within sight of his home as he returned from a house call. His sons, John and Robert, were 10 and 12 years old at that time. The shoemaker, Mr. Ligon, was at the house and helped Sara fend of Indian attackers, killing seven of the aggressors. Two Powhatans attempted to enter the house through the chimney where Sara scalded one to death with boiling water and bludgeoned the other with an iron roasting spit. After the loss of nine of their comrades, the raiders retreated, never to return. Sarah later remarried to a Mr. Dunwell. Her third marriage was to a Mr. Johnson. Her combined inventory and noncupative (oral) will were recorded 17 January 1660. The transcription of her oral will included bequests to John Woodson, Robert Woodson, Deborah Woodson, and Elizabeth Dunwell. Note: Deborah was born when Sara was about 41 years old; Elizabeth was born ca. 1850, placing her on the cusp of Sara's child bearing years.
