Lieut. William Pratt, an English emigrant, is "supposed to have come with Rev. Thomas Hooker to Newtown (now Cambridge), Mass., in 1633, married Elizabeth Clark, daughter of John Clark, first of Say-Brook, and afterwards of Milford." In 1636, a company of people left Newtown under the leadership of Thomas Hooker to establish a new settlement at Hartford; William Pratt was one of the group, and so became an original proprietor of the town. The first child, Elizabeth, (later the second wife of William Backus, Jr.), was born on Feb 1, 1642, followed by John on Feb. 20, 1645. The family then moved to Saybrook, with further children: Joseph, Sarah, William, Samuel, Lydia, and Nathaniel. Willim Pratt was made a lieutenant (presumably of the local train-band or militia) in 1661, and a representative to Hartford in 1666, serving through to the session of May, 1678,; records show his decease that same year. References: 168; 79. He married Elizabeth Clark about 1636 at Hartford, Conn. His home lot in Hartford was in the east side of the road to the Cow Pasture. He was named in the will of the Sachem, Uncas, and received a grant of Indian land near Hebron as well as the entire estate of James Ellis of Saybrook, whom Lt. Pratt took care of prior to the death of Mr. Ellis. In 1645, he removed to Saybrook. He was commissioned to a lieutenant in 1661 and a deputy for Saybrook to Hartford from 1666 to 1676. The exact date of his death is unknown, but it was between May, 1678 when he attended the General Court and Feb. 20, 1679 when his son, William, was married and called son of Lt.
