This family is descended from one Piers de Lutegareshale (c1134-1180), who was forester of Lutegaresdale or Lutegareshale in Wiltshire in the reign of Henry II. Though not well documented, his father was probably named John. Piers married Maud, and they were the parents of at least two sons: (1) Robert FitzPiers, married but no children, died 1186; and (2) Geoffrey FitzPiers (died 1213) Justiciar, Sheriff of Northamptonshire, who married twice. His first wife was Beatrix, daughter of William de Say and granddaughter and heiress of William de Mandeville, third Earl of Essex. Geoffrey therefore became Earl of Essex jure uxoris, and his four children by Beatrix took the name Mandeville - see that page for that family.

Geoffrey FitzPiers married second (in 1205) Aveline (died 1225), daughter of Roger de Clare, 2nd/3rd Earl of Hertford, 'Earl of Clare' (1116-1173), and widow of Sir William de Munchensy of Gooderstone (see Mouchensi); she is our ancestor by both marriages. They had three children: (1) John FitzGeoffrey FitzPiers, see below; (2) Cecily (died 1253), married Savary de Bohun of Midhurst; and (3) Hawise (died 1246), married Reginald de Mohun, 5th Lord of Dunster.

John FitzGeoffrey FitzPiers of Shere, Sheriff of Yorkshire, Baron of Birkhampstead (died 1256) married Isabel, daughter of Hugh Bigod, 3rd Earl of Norfolk and Suffolk, and widow of Gilbert de Lacy of Ewyas Lacy; she is our ancestor by both marriages. They had six children: (1) John FitzJohn of Shere, Sheriff of Westmoreland, 1st Lord Shere, married but died childless in 1275; (2) Richard FitzJohn of Shere, 2nd Lord, married but died childess in 1297; (3) Maud (died 1301), married first Sir Gerard de Furnivalle of Hallamshire, no children, and second William de Beauchamp of Elmley, 1st Earl of Warwick; (4) Isabel, married Robert de Vipont of Appleby, Sheriff of Westmorland; (5) Aveline (died 1274), married Walter de Burgh, Lord of Connaught, 1st Earl of Ulster; and (6) Joan (died 1303), married Theobald, 1st Lord de Botiller (see Butler).

The arms are described as: Quarterly, or and gules, a bordure vair.
