LifeSketch: "The American Genealogist," 70[Jul 1995]:142-28: of the Lakin family of Reading and Groton, Massachusets -- With the Possible Origin of the Bloods of Reading and Groton," by Douglas Richardson, M.A.own ancestor of this family, was born say 1570, in England. Little is known of this man as be left no will, nor is he mentioned in the scanty Bishops' Transcripts which have survived for the parish of Ruddington, county Nottingham. He was living as late as 7 February 1632/3, when he was mentioned by name in the will of his son, William Lakin, of Ruddington. No further record of ThomasB Lakin has been found. No individual with the surname Lakin is recorded in the hearth tax for the years 1664 and 1674 anywhere in Nottinghamshire, including the parish of Ruddington. This suggests that Thomas Lakin likely died prior to 1664 or else left the area (W.F. Webster, ed., "Nottingham Hearth Tax 1664: 1674," Thornton Soc., Rec. Ser., 37[Nottingham, 1988]).eously believed that the father of William Lakin [No. 2 below] was the William Lakin who died at Groton, Massachusetts, on 10 December 1672, aged about 91 years (VR, 2:238). Although it is not known who William Lakin of Groton was, he was probably related in some manner to the Lakin family of Ruddington, Nottinghamshire. Judging from William Lakin's age at death, he might have been a brother of Thomas Lakin of Ruddington. Even assuming a clerical error, this death record could not have been that of Thomas Lakin himself, who would surely have reached the century mark by 1672.homasB Lakin:tence is lacking. However, there evidently was a close kinship between the Blood and Lakin families. In his will transcribed below, William Lakin requested that if his children died young, their inheritance should revert to the children of Richard Blood Sr., then minors. This reversion clause strongly suggests that William Lakin and Richard Blood were brothers-in-law. This could either mean Richard Blood was married to Lakin's sister, or vice versa.y that a Richard Blood served as churchwarden at Ruddington in 1636 (FHL film #503,813).migrated to New England in the 1640s. Of these immigrants, Robert Blood originated from Ruddington, co. Nottingham, as did the Lakin family. This fact is established by a deed executed by Robert Blood in New England in 1649, whereby Blood sold to William Crafts of Lynn, Mass., his interest in the moiety of one tenement and in half an oxgang at Ruddington, co. Nottingham (Essex Co., Mass., Deeds 1:24).d John Lakin [Nos. 3 and 4 below], settled together at Groton, Mass. This pattern of settlement is typical of New World immigrants who, being related by blood in old England, came to New England and settled in the same towns. While such common settlement does not prove kinship between the Bloods and Lakins, taken together with the reversion clause of William Lakin's will, it provides strong evidence that the Bloods and Lakins were kin to each other in England. A discussion of the origin of the Blood immigrants is planned for a later article."
