In 1660 Gilbert purchased two islands, Bird's Island and Dutch Island. He purchased land which is now in the heart of Hartford, between Central Row and the Travelers Insurance Compnay's buildings, where he lived and kept an inn until his death. He purchased other parcels of land in Hartford while he lived there.onathan became involved in public affairs. He served as Marshall for Hartford for many years ending about 1675. With this responsibility he collected taxes, arrested wrong doers and carried out punishments of crimes and very likely was involved with some of the witchcraft trials of that time. In October 8, 1669 the Court confirmed Marshall Jonathan Gilbert Cornett of the Troope of Horse. Thus he became commander of the Hartford troop and gained a great deal of distinction.e a year, in May as a Court of Election and in October for general legislation. The General Assembly at this time had almost unlimited powers and acted as a superior court of original jurisdiction as well as a court of appeal from the actions of the four county courts.
