John and Catherine were very active in the Society of Friends, both witnessing numerous marriages and performing other services. Their membership was transferred from Nottingham MM to Deer Creek MM (Harford Co., MD), then to Hopewell MM, Frederick Co., VA, 4 Sep 1775, with their two infant daughters. John lived in nearby Berkeley Co., VA (later WV) from 1775 until 1782; in 1782, he leased, and later (1784) bought 300 acres of land in Frederick Co., VA (Frederick Co. Deed Book 20:235, 237 and 24A:221, 478). He later (1801) bought 460 acres, also in Frederick Co., described as being on Opequon Creek, 12 miles NE of the courthouse. John appears on Frederick Co. personal and land tax records through 1813 (land tax until 1817). From tax records, it appears John’s nephew, Henry, lived with him from 1787.
The Battle of Bunker Hill had been fought three months earlier, signaling the start of the Revolutionary War. Quakers who enlisted for military service in Pennsylvania and other nearby states were condemned. Quaker meetings in Virginia, however, were more lenient. On 20 Aug 1776, John Cowgill enlisted for a period of three years in the Virginia Continental Line. He served in the 7th, 11th, and 15th Regiments, was hospitalized at Morristown in the Spring of 1777, was at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-78, and was discharged 20 Aug 1779. There is no record of where John's wife and children lived while he was in service. It is presumed they stayed with John's half-brother, Henry Cowgill, and family, who lived in the area and were also members of the Hopewell Monthly Meeting.
For his war service John received a grant (warrant # 2559) of 100 acres of land in Tiffin Twp, Adams Co., Ohio. He held it about twelve years, then on 16 Jul 1806 sold it to John Hume. Eight years later John and his family moved to Ohio. John and family received a certificate, dated 9-8-1814, from Hopewell MM, VA, to Clear Creek MM, located in Clinton Co., OH. They were received in Clear Creek, MM, 24 Feb 1815. John’s will, dated 12 Mar 1822 and recorded in the Courthouse, Wilmington, Clinton Co., OH, 31 Oct 1822, names all his children (except the three who died young), and names Catherine as executor. He also provided for a grandchild, Catherine Patterson, “one bed, bedsteads and bedding, also one cow koown by the name of Bess, one new woman’s saddle to be bought her by my executor, and $5.00 in money to be given her at age of 18 years. Also one bureau after the decease of her grandmother”. Both bur Newberry Quaker Cem., Clinton Co.
