Rupert Crosthwaite
CROSTHWAITE, RUPERT Rupert Crosthwaite, a native San Diegan and lifelong resident of San Diego died on April 16, 2008, in San Diego from diabetes complications after a lengthy illness. Born on September 2, 1921, to Francis C. Crosthwaite and Rosalie (Jaussaud) Crosth-waite, Rupert was raised in San Diego with his older brothers Gilbert and Frederick. He grew up in the University/ Normal Heights area and attended Roosevelt and Wilson Junior High schools and graduated from Hoover High in February 1940. While at Hoover, Rupert excelled in baseball and basketball earning First Team All City League as a senior guard on the basketball team. He attended San Diego State College and in 1941 he joined the Navy with his childhood friend, Buddy Isham. He served four years as a Turret Gunner while stationed in Hawaii. Rupert was a great grandson of San Diego's oldest pioneer, Phillip Crosthwaite. Phillip Crosthwaite, an Irish immigrant, was San Diego County's first treasurer in 1850, Recorder, Commissioner of Education, Deputy County Clerk and San Diego County's Sheriff in the 4th year of San Diego's existence as a county. Rupert loved the athletic world and played amateur baseball and softball for many years. As a youngster he and his childhood buddy, Theo Tenant, would position themselves outside the right field fence at Normal Heights shagging balls hit over the fence by their friend, Ted Williams, and throwing them back towards home plate. Rupert was the starting third baseman for several San Diego AAA softball teams, including Andersen Furniture and Crown Carpets. For three years as the 3rd baseman for Crown Carpets, Rupert traveled all over the United States to play in the Softball World Series, consisting of the top softball teams in the United States. In 1950, after a stint as a salesman in the athletic field, Rupert along with his partner, Hal Higgins, founded Higgins and Crosthwaite Athletic Supply. In 1966, Rupert bought out Hal Higgins and continued his business with four San Diego County locations under the name, Crosthwaite Athletic Supply. The main store was located at "10th" and "C" street in downtown San Diego. The stores sold athletic equipment and uniforms to Pop Warner teams, government and civil service teams, high schools and colleges throughout Southern California. He also sold to professional teams including the San Diego Chargers, Gulls, Padres, and Rockets. Rupert traveled to many schools throughout Southern California over a 25 year period making many acquaintances and lifelong friends during this time, who knew him as "Rupe." He cherished his friendship with coaches and athletes alike and was proud to have supplied MacGregor baseball mitts and Whiting letterman jackets to many of San Diego's athletes. He often talked about how excited he was to have signed up Deron Johnson, who he considered to be one of San Diego's greatest athletes, to a sponsorship with MacGregor. Rupert was a fraternity member of Omega XI, and a member of the San Diego State University Alumni Association, Aztec Athletic Foundation, San Diego County Sports Association, San Diego Masonic Lodge 35 and a Former member of the San Diego Kiwanis Club. He also was a volunteer and mentor at the Hoover High School, a member of the Hoover High Hall of Fame, and a San Diego Hall of Champions Member and a Bob Breitbard Athletic foundation member. The Crosthwaite family wishes to extend special thanks to San Diego Hospice for the loving care provided to Rupert. Rupert was preceded in death by his parents and brother Frederick. He is survived by his brother Gilbert Crosthwaite, his loving wife Dorothy Remmp Crosthwaite of 62 years, daughter Kathy Alameda (husband Kenny) of Rancho Santa Fe, son Ron (wife Deidra) of La Crescenta, son Dennis of Hope, Idaho and five grandchildren, Kristen Pruett (husband Blair) Kevin Alameda, Brandon and Eric Crosthwaite, Alex Crosthwaite and great-granddaughter Sarah Pruett.
