BIRTH: From research of Hans-Henning Muendel: He learned name of Sir Francis from the South African Atherstones. He was of Thursford Hall, was High Sheriff of Norfolk, sat in Parliament-the one which summoned William and Mary (of Orange) to reign over England. He apparently lived and had family in Higham-on-the-Hill, 5 miles from town of Atherstone in Warwickshire. (CONFLICT: Note that several IGI entries on these Atherstone families place Higham-on-the-Hill in Leicester. Also,it is not likely Sir Francis would have been high sheriff of Norfolk if he lived in Warwickshire.)

HISTORY:From the book, «i»Barbers of the Peak,«/i» pp. 335-6 (for more see notes under Hugh Atherstone #57): The Atherstone Family. The Atherstones are an old Warwickshire family and were of considerable importance in Saxon times, for the Atherstones and Atherstone Priory are mentioned in the Domesday Book. In 1464 Atherstone Priory was transferred to the Carthusian Monks. @Atherstone Hall was built from the ruins of this priory. It was brought by marriage into the family of Sir John Repington, Kt., of Armington and was later sold to Abraham Bracebridge, who had married an Atherstone in about 1690. @The authentic history of the family who are now in South Africa starts in 1760, when three brothers went to Nottingham from Higham-on-the-Hill, a village five miles from Atherstone in Warwickshire. These three brothers were William, Hugh and Samuel, but there was also an elder brother Jonathan who remained in Warwickshire. It is from Hugh Atherstone the family [in South Africa] is descended....
