He fought in the Second Dutch War in 1666, aboard H.M.S. Royal Charles. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Hertfordshire between April 1668 and December 1668. He succeeded as the 3rd Viscount Cranborne, co. Dorset [E., 1604] on 3 December 1668. He succeeded as the 3rd Baron Cecil of Essendon, co. Rutland [E., 1603] on 3 December 1668. He succeeded as the 3rd Earl of Salisbury [E., 1605] on 3 December 1668. From 16 February 1676/77 to 1 June 1677 imprisoned in the Tower of London for questioning King Charles II's right to prorogue Parliament.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 3 January 1678/79. In April 1683 he participated in the Rye House Plot.
