Harry Otterspoor

Opmerkelijk is dat er drie Nederlandse broers in het leger dienen, waarvan een tweeling. Roep- en doopnamen worden kriskras door elkaar gebruikt op de officiële documenten uit die tijd. Servanus Otterspoor wordt met John aangesproken, zijn tweelingbroer Arnoldus noemt zich Harry en Franciscus Jacobus gaat gewoon als Frank door het leven. We houden de roepnamen aan bij de in Utrecht geboren broers.

Servanus Otterspoor en Hendrika Johanna van Kesteren besluiten kort voor de oorlog om met hun vijf kinderen vanuit Utrecht te emigreren naar Australië. Het gezin arriveert in 1912 aan boord van de S.S. Gneisenau in de Australische havenstad. Maar als Johanna in 1913 zwanger raakt, keert de familie terug naar Nederland. De emigratieplannen worden opgehouden door het uitbreken van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Pas in 1920 keert het gezin Otterspoor terug, en laat zich naturaliseren.

Harry trouwt in 1916
Harry en Frank Otterspoor blijven in Australië achter. Het aanvankelijke enthousiasme voor de oorlog zorgt ervoor dat de 21-jarige Harry en de 18-jarige Frank zich in de zomer van 1915 aanmelden voor het Australische leger. Ze liegen over hun nationaliteit, en zeggen in Pretoria, Zuid Afrika geboren te zijn.

De tweelingbroer van Frank, Harry, loot gelukkig. Hij wordt als cavalerist ingedeeld bij het elfde Light Horse regiment, een cavalerie-onderdeel dat twee jaar tevoren verliezen heeft geleid op Galliopoli maar de rest van de oorlog in Egypte wordt gestationeerd, waar het eerst het Suezkanaal bewaakt en af en toe vecht tegen de Turken.

Na de oorlog keert Harry terug naar Australië. In 1920 wordt hij Australische staatsburger. Hij leert een Australische vrouw kennen, trouwt en krijgt met haar kinderen. In 1946 is Harry echter spoorloos verdwenen. Hij heeft de naam Arnold Ward aangenomen en is ondergedoken in de stad Adelaide, waar hij 22 jaar met een andere vrouw zal samenleven. Iets wat zijn vrouw en kinderen pas na zijn dood in 1968 ontdekken.
