Tollina was in de jaren dertig van de 20e eeuw één van de snelste vrouwen ter wereld en liep in 1932 als eerste de 100 m binnen de 12 seconden. Schuurman nam eenmaal deel aan de Olympische Spelen. Ze was de voorloopster van Fanny Blankers-Koen op de sprintnummers en kreeg de bijnaam 'de vrouwelijke Berger.
