Op de trieste mistige morgen van de 25ste november 1867 bleef de boerderij van Wietze Hiddema en zijn vrouw Sietske Wopkes Sietzema, staande aan de Nijegaster Hogeweg nabij de Oudegasterdijk, gesloten. Het vee loeide op de stallen. Na onderzoek bleek dat de twee oude mensen hier 's nachts waren vermoord. De vrouw lag dood in de voorkamer onder de tafel en de boer bij de pomp in het achterhuis met de hond bij zich als trouwe wachter.
Lang bleven de daders onbekend, totdat voorwerpen te Houtigehage opdoken. De zaak kwam voor het Provinciale Gerechtshof te Leeuwarden, waar 37 personen verhoord werden. Bij vonnis van 8 maart 1871 werden Lammert Teijes Dalstra, 65 jaar, Markus Lammerts Dalstra, 27 jaar, beiden wonende te Surhuisterveensterheide en Auke Freerks Dalstra, 36 jaar, wonende te Houtigehage, tot levenslange tuchthuisstraf veroordeeld, later veranderd in 35 jaar cel. Eén van hen stierf in 1919 in het armenhuis.
Het drietal was 's avonds bij de oude mensen te 'jounpraten'. Eén van hen was boerenknecht bij Hiddema geweest.
Markus Dalstra en zijn vrouw Stijntje hadden tegen die tijd twee kinderen, Lammert en Ymkje (laatstgenoemde werd geboren vlak nadat Markus naar het gevang werd gestuurd). Maar nadat Markus in het tuchthuis terecht kwam, bleef Stijntje kinderen krijgen. Deze werden allen aangegeven door Gerhardus Franzes Postmus en aan de namen van die kinderen te zien werden ze vernoemd naar leden uit zijn familie. Dus hij moet wel de vader zijn geweest. Maar omdat Stijntje en Markus nog niet officieel gescheiden waren, werden de kinderen toch bij de Burgerlijke Stand ingeschreven als Dalstra's.
