Het hele gezin is op 31 januari 18777 omgekomen in Vierhuizen. Hoogstwaarschijnlijk is de storm in de nacht van 30 op 31 januari 1877 de oorzaak geweest van dit familiedrama. In de krant "Het nieuws van den Dag" van 5-2-1877 staat een bericht over de storm.
Woonplaats Vierhuizen ligt in de Westpolder, een ingepolderd buitendijks gebied. Na eerdere problemen met de dijk in 1874, begaf de dijk het op 30 januari 1877 tijdens de hevige storm. J.S. van Weerden (1888-1971) vertelt in een van zijn Marne-memories, heruitgegeven door de vereniging Historische Kring De Marne (Leens, 2000, p.140): "Reeds uren voor het zijn hoogste stand zou bereiken, sloeg het zeewater over de dijk, die het nog tot ongeveer elf uur schijnt te hebben gehouden. Toen kwam dedoorbraak, op twee plaatsen tegelijk. Het ergste wel achter in de polder, achter de boerderij van de heer Louwes [Westpolder 22] Met alles verwoestende kracht drong het water naar binnen. In een paar uur tijd stond de hele polder onder water. Het water drong de boerderijen binnen, waar in enkele gevallen de paarden tot aan de buik in het water stonden.
Erger en veel benauwder was de toestand in de arbeiderswoningen. Deze waren wel nieuw, doch de muren waren halfsteens en de grond waarop ze waren opgetrokken lag minder hoog dan de boerenerven. Vreselijke angsten moeten de bewoners van die kleine en zwakke huisjes hebben uitgestaan. Op de zolder gevlucht, zagen sommigen de muren scheuren, wankelen en ten dele ineenstorten. Om het minder wind te doen vatten, werden de pannen van het dak geworpen; wanneer de zolder op drift zou raken, dan was het gewicht minder. Anderen trachtten met hun hele familie de naastgelegen boerderij te bereiken. Soms lukte dit en dan waren ze voorlopig veilig, doch meermalen lukte dit niet."
Bij deze overstroming kwamen 14 mensen om het leven. 13 van hen werden in een gemeenschappelijk graf begraven op het oude kerkhof (bij de kerk) in Vierhuizen. Het veertiende slachtoffer, een meisje dat in de Westpolder logeerde, werd in Houwerzijl begraven. In 1931 is er een eenvoudig gedenkteken geplaatst op het graf in Vierhuizen, bij de kerk.
