Haye Durks uit Noorderdrachten kiest in 1811 de familienaam Betlehem (later veelal geschreven als Bethlehem), die reeds door zijn vader Durk Jans wordt gebruikt, voor zichzelf en zijn negen kindren: Tjsike 17, Molle 15, Durk 13, Grietje 11, Hendrik9, Hiltje 9, Jakobje 7, Janke 4 en Bouwe 1.

De familie Bethlehem ontleent zijn naam aan een boerderij met dezelfde naam in Beetsterzwaag. Deze boerderij bestaat nog steeds. Vermoedelijk stond deze boerderij in de buurt van een kapel of klooster met diezelfde naam. De boerderij bestaat al vrij lang. Hij staat aangegeven op kaarten uit 1685 en 1718. Vanaf 1709 komen de namen van de bewoners voor in de doopboek van de Nederlands Hervormde Kerk.
In 1811 woont Durk Jans met Grietje Haijes op de boerderij.
