Jan de With kwam uit Denemarken en heette eigenlijk Jens Nielsen True. In 1759 wordt Jan de With eigenaar van Stania State in Oenkerk. Hij was Commandeur in de Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC), welke functie hem bepaald geen windeieren legde. Later was hij officier bij de Admiraliteit van Friesland, maar toen had hij zijn schaapjes al lang op het droge. Hij trouwde op 19 april 1750 met Wikje Michiels Minnema, weduwe van Hendrik Canter Visscher. Jan noemde de state "Hofwegen" naar een schip dat hij voor de VOC als gezagvoerder had bevaren. Eerst is hun ene zoon Cornelis Michaël de With eigenaar van de state, maar als hij in 1792 ongehuwd en kinderloos sterft, wordt hij opgevolgd door zijn jongere broer Michaël de With. Hij trouwde met Ypkjen Rintske Boelardus van Boelens en kregen één zoon: Jan Frederik, die echter jong stierf. Michaël besluit de state in 1803 te verkopen en vestigt zich in Augustinusga.
