Sjouke Wijma ging al op zijn negende levensjaar mee op pad als landarbeiders hul
pje om zijn bijdrage te leveren aan het gezinsinkomen. Op zijn 18e jaar volgde h
ij de sporen van zijn vader en werd militair. In die hoedanigheid was hij in de
erehaag van zeer nabij getuige van de kroning van Koningin Wilhelmina (1898). Da
arna is hij ingezet bij de grensbewaking, er werd toen veel gesmokkeld. Ondertus
sen had hij ook zijn licht opgestoken in het metselaarsvak.
Van het Duitse Ruhrgebied tot Noord Holland heeft Sjouke gemetseld. Nadat Sjouke
's moeder aan de Spaanse Griep bezweken was zijn zij in het oude stee getrokken.
Lang heeft dit echter niet geduurd, in hun trektochten om het bestaan zijn zij t
enslotte in het west Friese Anna Paulowna terecht gekomen.
