De sleutel van zijn afstamming ligt in zijn huwelijkscontract: aanwezig was 'Ekke Jans, halve oom'. Was dit Ekke Jans van Zuidhorn, zoon van Jan Rienders en Ebeltje Sjabbes, of Ecke Jans van Houwerzijl, vermoedelijk zoon van Jan Eckes en Barber Heerkes? Barber Heerkes had uit haar eerder of later huwelijk met Jacob Haykes twee kinderen. Zie RA XLIII-a-2** (1019): Ulrum 27-5-1701 hebben aangezworen "Peter Haeijckes als voormont, Jurrien Tjaerts sibbe ende Cornelis Jacobs vreemde vooght over Jacob Haeijckes twie onmondige kinderen bij Barber Heerckes in echte verweckt." Overigens weten wij niet eens of Ekke Jans een halfbroer van Jacobs vader of van zijn moeder was. Uit andere huwelijkscontracten blijkt dat Jacob broer was van Trijntje Derks gehuwd met Jacob Reinders, en van Derk Derks gehuwd met Trijntje Hendriks. Alle drie hadden zij een dochter Trijntje, waaruit wij voorlopig voorzichtig afleiden dat hun moeder Trijntje heeft geheten.
