Hendrik en Mettje Schievink waren van beroep linnenwevers en afkomstig uit Nordhorn graafschap Bentheim te Duitsland. Deze graafschap was lange tijd deel van de Nederlandse gewesten, deels bezit van de Nassaus. Het is kerkelijk trouwens nog met Nederland verbonden en tot 1918 was Nederlans de voertaal. Hun zoon Durk Hendriks kwam rond 1790 naar Friesland. De reden dat wevers naar Drogeham e.o. trokken heeft vrijwel zeker te maken met het feit dat door de vlasverbouwing in deze strekenhet materiaal voor wevers voorhanden was.
