    Jan van Seggeren is als geboren aangegeven door Rinse Jans Monsma, van welk kind Rinse verklaarde de vader te zijn en het als het zijne te erkennen.

    Jan zal met deze sitiuatie niet tevreden zijn geweest, want hij noemde zich zelf Jan de Jong (familienaam van zijn moeder).
    In het inschrijvingsregister voor de Nationale Militie is Jan ingeschreven als Jan de Jong, vader onbekend, moeder Lieuwkje Lieuwes de Jong.

    Wellicht heeft het daarom ook zo lang geduurd voordat Jan in 1865 trouwde met Baukje Geerts Elzinga.
    Bij zijn huwelijk zijn bijlagen overgelegd van het huwelijk tussen Jacobus van Seggeren en zijn moeder Lieuwkje Lieuwes de Jong.
    Omdat Jan binnen dat huwelijk is geboren wordt hij daar dan ook vermeld als zoon van Jacobus van Seggeren, die zich dan in 1865 als kolonist in het bedelaarsgesticht te Ommerschans bevindt.

    Vermoedelijk heeft men vanaf dat moment Jan weer officieel geregistreerd als Jan van Seggeren.
    Zowel zijn kinderen als zijn overlijden zijn aangegeven met de familienaam van Seggeren.
