    Gehuwd met Grietje Wouda. Zoon Tjerk Smit. Overwegwachter NS. Herv. Voordat Smit in vaste dienst trad bij de Nederlandse Spoorwegen was hij los werkman bij de afdeling Weg en Werken. De Duitsers gaven hem een vaste aanstelling, waarna hij overwegwachter werd op post 47 even voorbij het station Buitenpost in de richting Groningen. Soms was Folkert ook koster in het gebouw van de Hervormde Evangelisatie. In verband met de spoorwegstaking was hij ondergedoken in het kerkgebouw van deze geloofsgemeenschap in Buitenpost. Door zijn kosterschap wist Smit dat onder één van de panelen onder het orgel een luik was, zodat men zich daaronder kon verbergen. Toen hem op 6 november 1944 een waarschuwing bereikte dat er een razzia op komst was, besloot hij naar zijn gezin te gaan. De volgende dag zou hij dan naar een rietveld van de voormalige turfstekerijen in de omgeving van zijn woonplaats vertrekken. Op 7 november 1944 ging hij samen met zijn buurman Gjalt Wijma, die ook geen trek had om verplicht voor de Duitsers te werken, naar de afgesproken plaats. Onderweg stuitte men op een patrouille van de zeer gevreesde Feldgendarmerie, die een zoektocht hield naar onderduikers. Smit en Wijma moesten op bevel de handen in de lucht steken, hetgeen Smit naliet. Zonder pardon werd hij doodgeschoten. Het lichaam van Folkert werd ontdekt door zijn zoon Tjerk, die naar zijn vader was gaan zoeken toen hij niet thuiskwam. Wijma werd ongemoeid gelaten. Begraven op de algemene begraafplaats te Buitenpost, vak B, regel 1, nr. 5. Op het station van Buitenpost is een gedenkplaat aangebracht waarop zijn naam staat vermeld.
