Na het overlijden van zijn vrouw is hij geëmigreerd naar Grandville, Michigan in Amerika. Hij is vermoedelijk in 1880 met zijn zoon Roelf Holtrop naar Amerika verhuisd. In 1884 woonde hij daar al, zo blijkt uit de overlijdensakte van zijn dochter Jantje Holtrop.
In 1894 is hij te Wyoming, Michigan, Amerika overleden.
